IB-1 SN Wesley ville News On Friday, April 27th, there was a pleasant evening spent at Welcome Sunday school room when seven tables of euchre players sought those elusive lone hands. There is one difficulty with progressive games. There arc those who move right along with the business in hand, then there are those who would rather talk than play, so slow up the swift people. However, all finished at nearly the same time with Berniece Best winning winning the high score prize, and Ken Symons winning for the men. Hope Holdaway and Arnold Thorndyke won the consolations. Mrs. Phyllis Clarke was unable to attend but sent several small blooming blooming African violets which were won by both men and women. Refreshments were served while that very important part of a party is taking place-conversation. place-conversation. The evening was sponsored by group two of the U.C.W. On Saturday, April 28, the funeral of the late Mrs. Ida Toppin was held from the Ross Funeral Chapel, Port Hope, to Wesleyville cemetery for interment. Local pallbearers were Arnold Thorndyke and Carroll Nichols. The service at the chapel and at the cemetery cemetery was conducted by Rev. Gordon Rutherford of Welcome. Welcome. Following the funeral, members of the family and neighbours were invited to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Carroll Nichols for refreshments and an opportunity to show love and sympathy for son Keith and wife Elizabeth, of Toronto, daughter Mary of California, as well as others from North Bay, Scarborough, Toronto and Beaverton, including including granddaughter Judith and family and granddaughter granddaughter Janet, their husbands and Judith's children Ann and Graham. Mrs. Toppin was a much loved person and in spite of a , handicap of poor hearing causéd by a childhood illness, she participated fully in the community and church where she lived to make a fine contribution to its life. Her death last week followed a long illness in Toronto where she had moved from Wesleyville Wesleyville after the death of her husband. The very lovely Sunday morning of April the 29th made it a little easier to get to church on time after losing that one hour's sleep. At Welcome, Mrs. J. McHolm opened the service for the few minutes before Rev. Rutherford arrived from Garden Hill. This day was set aside for Camping Sunday so Krista McHolm talked to the children about life at Quin-Mo- Lac and made it sound attractive attractive indeed. Those children who wish to go are assisted by the AOTS, the U.C.W. and by the gift of a lady from Zion who made provision for this help annually. Children from that area are given priority. The sermon followed the theme of camping too, and related the marvels of God's natural world to man's need for relaxation and time to meditate on God's purpose for him, and for man's responsibility responsibility for this beautiful earth. The choir's anthem was "All in an April Evening." The offering was received by John Connelly, Bruce Hendry, Bill Beckett and Ward Lax. A lovely arrangement of flowers was in memory of Mrs. Ida Toppin. Spring flowers in the altar vases, an Easter lily and yellow chrysanthemums were the floral offerings and a colourful tribute to spring. Next Sunday, May ti, Welcome will celebrate the 150th year of its congregation and service will be at 11 a.m. Paul Hoskin who has been stationed at Vancouver Island navy training base arrived back in Ontario for a visit, on Thursday of last week.
