The Eagles had a man advantage but a bit of loose play allowed the Merchants Merchants to score a short handed goal. This was the extent of the scoring in the second period. The score was tied at 1 to 1 after two periods of play. The Eagles scored 12 seconds into the third period, Duane Major scoring, assisted by Chris Michelson and Pete Krukkert to give the Eagles a 2 to 1 lead. The Eagles' Chris Michelson got the insurance goal with only 1:57 left in the game, assisted by Carl Neilson to give the Eagles a hard fought 3 to 1 victory. Win 7 to 4 in Overtime The Eagles got off to a fast start again in this game even though there were four regulars regulars missing from.the lineup. With three minutes gone in the game, Jeff Smith scored his first of three goals from Randy Ellis and Duane Major on a power p|ay. Only fifty five seconds later, Jeff scored his second goal from Brad Clemens and Dayrell Rowe to give' thé Eagles a 2 to 0 lead. The Merchants scored two power play goals of their own before the period ended in a 2 to 2 tie. The only goal by the Eagles in the second period was scored by hustling Dayrell Rowe, assisted by Brian Heard while the Eagles were playing short handed. The Merchants scored with only a minute left in the second period to earn a 3 to 3 tie after two periods. Brad Clemens scored for the Eagles at the fifteen minute mark of the third period from Dayrell Rowe to give them a 4 to 3 lead. But the Eagles could not hold the lead, the Merchants Merchants scored with only three minutes left to tie the score at 4 to 4 at the end of regulation time. The Eagles came out smoking smoking in the ten minute overtime period. Dayrell Rowe scored after only a minute of play, assisted by Brian Heard. Then, Randy Ellis scored a power play goal from Pete Krukkert and Jeff Smith at the Boyle Bantam Selects Lose To Newcastle On Thursday, March 1st Boyle Bantam Selects went to Newcastle to play their team. In the first period, Newcastle Newcastle had the only goal of this period. The second period started out with Bowman- 'ville's Carl Feddema doing the honours from a pass by Shane Crombie, Bowmanville then went ahead to make it 2 - 1 with a goal by Brad Rushak after receiving the puck from Rob Davidson and Paul Brunt, Newcastle then tied the score before the end of the second period. The third period saw Newcastle Newcastle go ahead of the Boyle team with two more goals. At 32 seconds left in the game, Carl Feddema scored his second goal in the game from a nice pass by David Reid to make the final score 4 - 3 for Newcastle, Paul Stephen and Stephen Conway shared net minding duties. The feeling before this series started was that it would probably go at least six games so it came as a surprise that the Eagles won in a four game sweep. In the four games played Little Britain were never ahead on the score board. In the overtime period played Wednesday night, the Eagles out shot Little Britain 17 to 9 and out scored them 3 to 0. Scott Hooper played a solid game in goal to record the win. The Eagles now go head to head against Frankford Huskies who won the Quinte - St. Lawrance group quite handily. This will be a best of seven series with the first game played Friday night, March 16 in Frankford at 8:30 p.m. with the second game in the Eagles' nest Sunday, March 18 at 7:30. The site of the next game will depend on who wins the coin toss. This series is the All Ontario Quarter Finals. Wonderland Tourney Not So For Durham Building Toros Union ville 9 Toros 1 Union ville sported a full minor team from a BB centre and showed the Toros what' good hustle, good speed, good passing and good luck can do for a team. The Bowmanville boys were dominated in every facet of the game. The lone Toros' goal was scored by Nicky Dennis, unassisted. The Toros player of the game was Ian Knight. Tottenham 4 Toros 2 Before the game started the Toros knew that the Tottenham Tottenham goalkeeper was good and he proved to be tough. The Toros opened the scoring when Andrew Day stole the puck from a Tottenham player, skated a few yards with it before passing it to Ian Knight who passed to Jeff Acheson; he fired a quick shot into the upper right-hand corner of the goal. Tottenham replied with a goal of their own and then Jeff had another shot almost identical to the first, but the goal keeper was able to stop this one. Nickey then scored assisted by Jim Pithie. The Toros took a couple of penalties and Tottenham went ahead. In the third period Bowmanville tried hard and hustled but could not get an effective shot away and as so often happens, Tottenham came out of their own end after resisting considerable pressure and scored the fourth goal. The Toros' player of the game was Nicky. Toros 3 Red Wings 2 The Toros played host to the Minor Red Wings on Sunday and skated to a victory. The Red Wings opened the scoring on a power play even though the Toros had had many chances up to this point but good goal tending had held them at bay. The equalising goal was scored by Jim Pithie from Jeff Acheson, Jim said he did not see the puck go in, he was falling as he shot and the goal keeper was not expecting it, he probably did not see it either. Marc Peirce put the Toros ahead with a great effort but shortly after the Toros found themselves two men short and the Red Wings were able to captialize. Towards the end of the third period Nicky scored assisted by Marc to put the Toros ahead to stay. The Checkers Variety Minor Atom Toros bowed out of the O.M.H.A. Eastern Ontario Finals on Saturday, being beaten 4 - 3 by Trenton. The Toros lost the round nine points to three. The Toros struck quickly in the opening period when Steve Desmedt connected on a play set up by Chad Armstrong and defenceman Joel Crombie. The visitors evened the count less than a minute later. The host club scored the go-ahead goal at the 4:29 mark only to have the Bowmanville squad tie the score at 2 - 2 when Corey Strand notched one with the assists going to David Real and Todd Cannings. Steve Desmedt picked up his second of the game to put the Checkers Variety Club ahead, with the assist going to Chad Armstrong who had a strong game. Trenton again tied the score late in the period. The host club scored the only goal of the final frame to win the series and the Eastern Ontario Championship. Both clubs were presented with individual trophies at the conclusion conclusion of the contest. Defeat Canadiens 5-0 On Sunday morning, the Checkers Variety Minor Atom Toros travelled to Oshawa for an exhibition game, and blasted blasted the Oshawa Little N.H.L. Canadiens 5 - 0. There was no scoring until the second period when the Toros' Kyle Purdy connected, the play being set up by his linemates Steve Desmedt and Chad Armstrong. Armstrong scored the second goal assisted assisted by defenceman Mark Breckenridge. This goal came early in the final frame. Armstrong scored again, this time the assist going to Purdy. Steve Desmedt picked up the fourth Bowmanville goal, unassisted. unassisted. The final goal of the game was notched by Ryan Stewart, with the assist going to hard-working Desmedt. The Bowmanville lads played played very well on the weekend and showed some offensive spirit that has been lacking in recent weeks. The team is loaded .with talent and when the lads put their minds to it, can be competitive with anyone.
