Charlie Reid, -in a game with Les Coombes, found himself with a 29 hand, the highest obtainable in the game. FLASHBACK --10 YEARS AGO -- Golf instruction instruction will begin this Friday night and continue each Friday night for seven weeks at the Legion Hall, Queen Street. Instructors will be Max Yourth, Dune Ulley and Bill Lyle. NEWCASTLE SLOW PITCH ASSN. -- The newly formed Newcastle Slow Pitch Association will be holding registrations at the Bowmanville Mall on Saturday, March 31st and Saturday, April 7th from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. This new association will supply Slow Pitch Ball for girls ages 7 to 21 years of age for residents of Bowmanville, Bowmanville, Darlington Township, Newcastle Village, Brownsdale and Newtonville. GAMES -- Cobourg's Highland Games have been scheduled for Saturday, July 7th. One of the features this year will be the performance of 30 students from Humber College who are singing singing and dancing their way across Ontario as part of the bi-centennial celebrations, this summer. They travel in a 40 foot trailer which converts to a cabaret stage. BASEBALL -- Several baseball leagues are getting underway with indoor practices being held weekly. If you are interested in playing ball this year check with Joe Kennett at the Community Services Department for information. SENIOR BASEBALL -- Indoor practices will be held on Wednesdays from 7 - 9 at the Senior Public School starting March 14th. There are a lot of good baseball players in this area, let's see some new faces out there for this team. Canadians. In the first two periods the novice selects held their own but slacked up in the third period, to be defeated 7 -1 by the Canadians. Ken Wright's goal was scored by Steve Deblois. Back to Bowmanville, for a 4:00 game against Oshawa Canadians, brought another win to the Selects' records. Goals were scored by Collin Taggart, Mark Bradley (two) and Steve Deblois, assists for Chris McCarthy, Bruce Harnum, Doug Parkin (two), Gary Adams, and Richard Bateman. The final score was 4 - 2 for Ken Wright Selects. PLAYOFFS -- Congratulations to the Cowan Pontiac Jr. C Red Eagles who have defeated Little Britain to advance to the next series against Frankford on Friday, March 16th in Frankford. The Toros did not play their best game of the year, but they-skated well enough to earn a 2 - 2 tie with Cobourg who had never lost or tied any league or playoff game this year. In the first period, both teams had many chances but were unable to capitalize due to strong goaltending by Cobourg's Page and Bowmanville's Geoff Smith. Cobourg forechecked strongly throughout the game, causing causing the Toros to cough up the puck numerous times and resulting in far too many giveaways. Second period action saw the Toros get on the scoreboard first when Matthew Doughty blinked the red light, assisted by Kent Vanderheyden and Chris Brown. Near the end of the second period, Cobourg scored to tie the game at one. In third period, Cobourg scored again to go in front 2 -1. The Toros didn't give up and put some great pressure pressure on the Cobourg cage cop but to no avail. Finally, with 1:25 left on the clock and a faceoff deep ir. In the third period, the Toros once again outseored Oshawa 3 -1. Oshawa scored first to narrow the Toros' lead to 4 - 3. Kevin Roberts slammed the fifth Toros' goal by the Oshawa cage cop two minutes later, with Greg White and Jason Kiely drawing the assists. The sixth Toros' goal was scored by Kent Vanderheyden, who bounced his shot in off of a Bruin defender, assisted assisted by Matthew Doughty and Martin d'Entremont. Martin got his hattrick when he scored the Toros' seventh goal, with assists going to Matthew Doughty, his fifth assist of the game and Chris Brown. Bowmanville Restaurant, Restaurant, Beasties and Courtice Auto Wreckers were all sidelined sidelined while United Drug and San Marino Chargers recorded recorded their second tie in a best of three affair. Clinic Pharmacy, on the strength of two goals in the final seven minutes, overcame overcame a 4 - 3 deficit to advance to the championship round in the Oliver Division. Clinic came to life after a Mike Willoughby stop on Bowmanville Bowmanville Restaurant's Steve Pollard who took a pass and broke in unmolested from centre ice. Willoughby second guessed the shooter and made the stop with Pollard already counting the goal. From that point, Clinic took control and Pàt Murdock blasted two to complete his hat-trick. John •Allen had the other Clinic goals. Scoring for the Restaurant Restaurant were Wilfred White two, Steve Pollard and Grant Powell. TownSports Eliminates Castle To Advance In the fifth game of the best of five semi-finals between Castle Hotel and Town Sports played March 9, Town Sports came up with a solid team effort, winning 6-2 to advance to the Town League finals. Town Sports took a first period 3 - 0 lead on goals from Kevin Hawes, Darrell Knox and Doug Crough. The teams were scoreless in the second period and in the third period Castle scored early to make it 3 - 1 on a goal by Ralph Cryderman. Town Sports then put the game out of reach with three quick goals from Tom Connell, Darrell Knox and Kevin Hawes. Castle added one more goal by Kevin Tink to round out the scoring in the third period. Doug Crough picked up four assists, with additional assists going to Sam Allen, Paul Dadson, Chris Dwyer and Tom Connell.
