Rough Week for McGregor Bantams If each team were allowed to forget one week I'm sure the week of Feb. 27,1984 would be the McGregor Hardware Bantams' week. .Starting with Feb. 27, the boys hosted Orono. As all games have gone this year, with this team, no luck was our plight. Except for one surge midway through the first period, when Mark Tripp scored unassisted, Orono was allowed free reign ending the game with a well deserved 8 -1 score. The second chance Friday, March 2, with the same team saw a much improved effort and likewise a better score of 3 - 1. In this contest, the boys battled to a 0 - 0 tie at the end of two but unable to hold tight, the Orono lads broke the ice with three before Rob Real struck from Brad Carnegie and Chris Hall. This game was highlighted with a much improved improved defensive effort from both defence and forwards. Saturday, March 3 was Oshawa's turn to get the win. The Redwings who had been humbled during our last encounter encounter came out hot and skated off with a convincing 8 - 2 victory. The two scoring plays came when Eric Janssens deflected a shot from Chris Hall and later an unassisted tally from Mark Tripp. Maybe our bad luck this past week will be the end for this year and a good tournament tournament in Harriston will end our year with victory. The boys play Sharon Saturday, March 11, 1984 at Darlington. Maybe more support support would encourage the Toros to higher achievements. The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, March 7,1984 7 Cobourg Proves Too Strong For Durham Building's Team - - Eagles Take Two Game Lead Over Little Britain in Playoffs W. Frank Midgets The W. Frank Major Midgets shook off an horrendous horrendous opening game to take a 2 -1 series lead over Cobourg in their best of five quarter final. Cobourg thrashed Bowmanville Bowmanville 11 - 3 in the series opener at Darlington Feb. 29. It was a close game for two periods, but Cobourg broke the game wide open with a six goal third period. Mark Hickey, Jeff Dawson and Pierre St. Amand scored the Toros' goals. It was the third consecutive loss for the Midgets, as they were beaten 6 - 4 by Trenton on Sunday and 7 - 3 by Cobourg on Monday to complete the preliminary preliminary round. Bowmanville ended the round robin in second place with a 4 - 2 won-loss record behind Cobourg 5 and 1. The Toros had a full lineup for the first time in six weeks, and it showed in Cobourg last Thursday as Bowmanville evened the series with a 5 - 3 victory. The club has been plagued by injuries and sickness sickness since the Christmas break, but came up with a gutsy effort with the full lineup. lineup. Tommy McLaughlin scored ten seconds into the game and it seemed to lift the Toros. Cobourg tied the score on a power play at 4:53 of the 1st period but Brent Neill scored his first of three goals to make it 2 - 1 after the first. Lome Whitmarsh and Andrew Davey assisted. Neill made it 3 - 1 at 4:02 of the second period, from Whitmarsh and McLaughlin assisting. Cobourg Cobourg scored another power play goal with just over six minutes left in the period. In the final period, Bowmanville Bowmanville made it 4 - 2 as Hickey blasted home a shot from Davey. Cobourg again drew within a goal, but Neill put the game on ice with his 3rd goal with just under four minutes remaining. Davey drew the lone assist. It was an exciting game, with the Toros completely reversing reversing their form. They fore- checked strongly, and the defence defence moved the puck out of their own zone smartly. It was a total team effort. 1 The third game of the series was a repeat of the second. The Toros checked hard and built up a 5 -1 lead early in the third period, only to have Cobourg come back on power play goals. Dawson opened the scoring at 13:15 of the first period with an unassisted goal. Cobourg tied the score on a power play goal with just nine seconds remaining in the period. The Toros took control of the game with two second period goals. Brad Bamsey, returning returning from his broken collar- bone, scored from Scott McLeod and Chris Lee. Then McLeod made it 3 -1 from Lee and Scott Meldrum. Up to this point, only five penalties had been called, but the 3rd period was totally different, with 17 minor penalties to Bowmanville. Bowmanville. The Toros upped their lead to 5 -1 on goals by Davey (from McLeod and Bamsey) and McLeod (from St. Amand and Duncan). Cobourg then came back with three goals of their own, the last two power : play efforts. It was exciting for the final ten minutes, with goaltender Langford forced to make several big saves. Chris Lee put Cobourg away with 59 seconds left, to make it a 6 - 4 final. By Buck Janack The storm delayed Central Ontario Jr. C League finals got underway Saturday night, March 3 in the Little Britain arena before a capacity crowd. The Cowan-Pontiac Eagles got off to a flying start in this series claiming a 5 to 3 victory, a different start than in the quarter finals when they were down 1 to 0 after one game to Port Perry and in the semi-finals when they were down two games to nothing to the Lakefield Chiefs. The Eagles and the Merchants Merchants battled through a scoreless first period on very even terms. But after about five minutes of the second period, the Eagles' Chris Michelson opened the scoring with his first of two goals, assisted by Carl Neilson and Bob Dwyer. Then Jeff Smith scored, assisted by Tim Preston. The Eagles stretched their lead to 3 to 0 when Duane Major scored a power play goal from Bob Dwyer and Paul Reed. The Merchants got on the board with a power play goal of their own to narrow the Eagles' lead to 3 to 1, but Chris Michelson scored his second goal of the night, assisted by Pete Krukkert and Tim Preston. Then it was Dayreil Rowe from Brad Clemens and Duane Major to build the Eagles lead to 5 to 1. All this scoring took place in a ten minute span in the second period. The Merchants did get a goal late in the second period B.H.S. Teachers Win Championship In Lakeshore Hockey Tournament GILHAH IS COMING! By Bob Sheridan On Saturday, March 3, we travelled to Colborne to play in four hockey games starting at 0:00 a.m. and finishing late in the evening. In the x morning game, Cobourg East jumped out to a three goal lead but we were able to fight back with two goals by John Winder and one By Bob Sheridan to tie the game. In the final minute, Carol Twist drove in past the lone defenseman, put a great move on the goaltender, and fired a bullet drive high into the twine to win the opener. Bowmanville United Soccer Club will be holding Soccer Registrations on Friday and Saturday - March 23 - 24 and Friday and Saturday - March 30 - 31 Registration Fee:$25.00 03) a w- Friday Registrations at Waverley Public School 6:00 - 8:30 p.m. Saturday Registrations at Bowmanville Mall 12 Noon - 4:00 p.m. Final Day for Registration Saturday, March 31st NO REGISTRATIONS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THAT DATE. At two in the afternoon, we met Campbellford and defeated defeated them 3 - 2 on goals by John Winder and Jim Empring- ham. At 6:00 p.m., we met Port Hope, last year's champions, and gave up an early two goals. Again with a tenacious desire that would not accept defeat, we fought back with two goals by John Winder and Jim Empringham. Carol Twist scored the winner, driving driving in a fine shot mid-way through the second period. John Winder then scored two late goals as a tired Port Hope team tried to press the attack. We then rested for five minutes while the ice was cleaned and then played the championship game with Trenton teachers. John Winder opened the scoring with two cannon blasts that the Trenton goaltender never saw. Carol Twist drove in Bob Sheridan's rebound to make the score 3-1. Trenton then made a valiant comeback with two late period efforts. At the three minute mark of the overtime overtime period, John Winder again fired a rifle snap-shot to win the tournament. John Winder, with a total of nine goals on the day's play is to be congratulated for leading leading our team to victory. John put forth an amazingly aggressive aggressive and talented two way display and it was a pleasure to Be on the same ice surface with him. Words cannot express adequate praise for the play of our two lady teachers, Sandra Ramer and Carol Twist. Sandra played on the same forward line with John Winder and Jim Empringham and gained eight assists on their goals. Carol scored three goals and had one assist. All of Carol's goals were important counters, especially the early morning game winner. The excellent play of these fine young athletes was no small factor in disconcerting our male opposition. Mike Lindop and Charlie Lynch played on the same line with Carol. Both men checked aggressively and played a strong physical game along the boards and in the corners. Their play made a balanced and consistent attack possible. Our defense corps of Bill Lees, Wayne Swerdfager, Bill Brunt and Norm Johnson played fine positional hockey, breaking up rushes and moving moving the puck up quickly to the forwards. It is impossible to win four games in one day without steady and sometimes brilliant brilliant goaltending. Our man, Fred Weinhold did the job for us. The Merchants scored the only goal of the third period but it was late in the period and proved to be too little too late as the Eagles checked the Merchants to a stand still and earned the 5 to 3 victory. The next two games will be in the Eagles' nest Sunday, March 4 and Tuesday, March 6. The fourth game of the' series will be Wednesday, March 7 at 8:30 in Little Britain. The fifth game in Bowmanville in the Eagles' nest Friday, March 9 at 8 p.m. A big thank you to all the people that gave up their ice time to make this possible. The sixth game slated for Little Britain is Saturday, March 10 at 8 p.m. and the seventh game in Bowmanville Tuesday, March 13 at 8:30 p.m. Little Britain 3 Eagles 11 The Little Britain Merchants Merchants came calling to the Eagles' nest Sunday night and were handed an 11 to 3 beating by the Eagles. In this very chippy game with the Merchants Merchants earning 73 penalty minutes and the Eagles 59 minutes for a game total of 132 minutes, the two teams bat tled on even terms for almost two periods before the Eagles blew the game wide open with two goals in 14 seconds. The Eagles had a 1 to 0 lead after one period, Brian Heard getting the only goal assisted By Dayreil Rowe. It took the Merchants only 13 seconds into the second period to tie the score at one with a power play goal, only to have the Eagles get two power play goals, the first by Chris Michelson from Tim Preston then Bob Dwyer from Randy Ellis only a minute later to give the Eagles a 3 to 1 lead. But, at the fifteen minute mark the Merchants narrowed narrowed the Eagles' lead to 3 to 2 with another power play goal. The Eagles then came Back with two power play goals in 14 seconds. The first by Duane Major from Bob Dwyer and Tim Preston then Brian Heard with his second of the night from Dayreil Rowe and Duane Major. This gave the Eagles a 5 to 2 lead after two periods. The Eagles got another power play goal after only two minutes of the third period, Brad Clemens scoring assisted assisted by Andy Terry. Only ten seconds later, Tim Preston scored from Paul Reed and Randy Ellis to give the Eagles a 7 to 2 lead. Bob Dwyer took over for the Eagles, scoring a pure hat trick in only four minutes and eleven seconds. The first goal was assisted by Barry Goulah and Brad Clemens, the second by Barry Goulah and Ken Farrow, the third by Dayreil Rowe. This gave Bob four goals for the night. Little Britain got their third goal to make the score 10 to 3 only to have the Eagles' Pete Krukkert close out the scoring assisted by Jeff Smith, giving the Eagles an 11 to 3 win. Eight of the Eagles' 11 goals and two of the Merchants' three goals were scored when the opposition had one or more men in the penalty box. (You would think this should carry a message for both teams.) Game three in the Eagles' nest Tuesday night, March 6 is a big game. The Eagles could take a strangle hold on the series or the Merchants could get right back into the battle. The fourth game is in Little Britain Wednesday, March 7 at 8:30 p.m. with the fifth game scheduled for Bowmanville Bowmanville Friday, March 9 at 8 p.m. If the series goes seven games the seventh game will be in the Eagles' nest Tuesday, March 13 at 8:30 p.m. Cobourg 5 - Toros 1 This was a playoff game for the Toros, who are sponsored by Durham Building Supplies, and they had hoped to win but Cobourg were too good. Cobourg had a five goal lead by the end of the second period. The Toros' Ian Knight did all the scoring in the third period, assisted by Phillip Green and Jeremy Laird. Whitby 11 - Toros 5 The score gives absolutely no indication of the type of contest this was. Bowmanville and Whitby were tied five goals each, seven minutes from the end of the game and the Toros were full value for the tie. It is hard to know what went wrong in the last seven minutes but the Toros were unlucky in a few cases. The Toros opened the scoring scoring when they scored a short- handed goal. Nicky Dennis fed a perfect pass to Jim Pithie who made a perfect shot. Good play boys. Whitby then scored three unanswered goals and Brad Lyons pulled the Toros within one as Jeremy and Marc Peirce assisted on the goal. Whitby scored their fourth goal while Ian Knight scored a power play goal for the Toros. Whitby scored again and then the Toros scored two goals to tie the score. Brad Lyons scored with the assist going to Nicky, his 100th point of the year and finally Jim from Nicky and Andrew Day. Toros 6 - Red Wings 4 The Toros did not Bave all their players available for this game and had to go all out on every shift but they did deserve deserve this win, every player did his best. Jeff Acheson played a tough game and RoBert Romano made the stops that counted. Scoring summary: Nicky Dennis from Marc Peirce, Brad from Jeremy and Jeff Acheson, Nicky from Jim and Marc, Jeremy from Michael Colbourne, Paul Hindman from Nicky and Michael, Nicky unassisted. A special thanks to the referees who officiated in this game. They made it fun for all players and spectators. Toros 0 - Cobourg 5 • The last playoff game of the year for the Pee Wee 2's and they gave 100 percent, but Cobourg were just too good. The Toros missed Jeff Rohr for the second game. Get well soon Jeff. This team will be playing in three more tournaments tournaments before the season ends and the writer wishes them a lot of luck, the players and coaching staff have worked very hard and deserve to win something. Heritage Major Atoms On Saturday, Feb. 25th, the Major Atoms Toros hosted Cobourg at Darlington Sports Centre and the visitors came out on top 8-5. Cobourg came out strong, taking a 3 - 0 lead after only 1:34 in first period play. The Bowmanville boys finally got on the scoreboard early in the second period when Shawn McFadyen slammed in a pass- out from Martin d'Entremont and Greg White. Cobourg then went ahead 4 - 1 but the Mighty Bulls came charging back. First, Matthew Doughty took a relay from Corey Chambers and drove one by the Cobourg cage cop. Then Corey Chambers poked a Ryan Putnam rebound rebound in to narrow the score 4 - 3. The Cougars came roaring back and scored just 16 seconds later to end the second period with a 5 - 3 lead. In the third period, Chris Brown broke in all alone and blasted a bullet into the Cobourg net to again bring the Toros within one goal. Bowmanville Bowmanville tried hard but couldn't get the equalizer. In a span of one minute and 18 seconds, Cobourg showed their power, scoring three goals toigo ahead 8 - 4. Shawn McFadyen closed out the Toros scoring with just 19 seconds remaining, scoring the Toros fifth goal, assisted by Kent Vanderheyden and Chris Brown. Cobourg has not lost a league or playoff game yet this year, but on March 2, if the Bowmanville boys can put it all together I think Cobourg's record will show one loss. On Sunday, Feb. 26th Lindsay, the Heritage House Major Atoms won their first playoff game 7 - 4 over the Lindsay Atoms. The Toros got on the score- board first when Kent Vanderheyden Vanderheyden and Matthew Doughty combined to set-up Jason Kiely who bulged the twine with his first of the year. The Toros went ahead by two when Jeff Flintoff's blast caught the corner, unassisted. Martin d'Entremont then tipped tipped in a Matthew Doughty pass to give the Toros a 3 - 0 lead. Lindsay narrowed the gap to 3 -1 with just 19 seconds remaining in the first period. In the second period, Matthew Doughty scored the 4th Toro goal assisted by Martin d'Entremont and Kent Vanderheyden. Lindsay, then scored twice, capitalizing on some scrambly Toro play, to cut Bowmanville's lead to 4 - 3. Eighteen seconds were left in the second period when Shawn McFadyen scored Bowmanville's Bowmanville's fifth goal, assisted by Geoff Goode and Jason Kiely. The Toros went ahead 6-3 in the third period when Shawn McFadyen won a faceoff deep in Lindsay's end and drew it back to Ryan Putnam who slid a softie through the Lindsay goalie's legs. Lindsay scored their fourth goal 39 seconds later, but the Toros came charging back 17 seconds after that, scoring their seventh goal off the stick of Chris Brown, assisted by Matthew Doughty and Greg White. Except for three minutes of sloppy play, the Toros pretty well controlled the play and showed some pretty passing plays and lots of hustle.
