Box 36, Bowmanville YELVERTONNEWS The 64 dollar question everyone is asking everyone else is "Has Spring really sprung" or is it just a joke the weatherlady ( there aren't any weathermen hardly any more since women's Lib took over) is playing with us to throw' us off our guard. Another coyote chorus woke us from our slumber this past week with a canine romantic interlude; the Horned Larks, the customary customary harbinger of spring in these parts, are honking their horns with their familiar cheery musical twitter and a Lindsay chap we know saw not one but three woodchucks out in the field on Friday a.m., Feb. 17th. Guess we'll not take off our storm windows for a few days yet or worry about getting the power lawn mower started till that 3'/> foot snowdrift snowdrift beside the pool disappears. disappears. Now, with the Junior C semi finals in progress, hockey fans are having a hay-day. To no one's particular surprise the teams of Bowmanville, Lake- field, Little Britain and Lindsay Lindsay Muskies survived the ■quarter-finals. The first few games in the semi finals have "provided a few surprises - Lakefield trimming the Eagles' wings by a double to nothing score 8 - 4 in the first playoff game, and also taking the second game as well, and Little Britain beating Lindsay Muskies in their first three games in a 4 out of 7, raised quite a few eyebrows as well as the two top seasons teams fared not too well. Congratulations to Gordie Cornell of the Lindsay Muskies in winning two awards for regular season play - the Most Valuable Player of the League - the "Eleanor Gilliam Award" and the Highest Goal Scorer of the CARNATION FLOWER SHOP HOSPITAL and SYMPATHY ARRANGEMENTS' Flowering Plants and Cut Flowers 623-7141 33 Division St., Bowmanville We'd Like To Get Into Your Hair! A smaller turnout than usual was present on Sunday a.m. to hear Dennis the Fransky deliver a rather challenging challenging sermon. Among those present accompanying Shirley and Harold Bain were Harold's mother, his sister and her husband and their daughter who are currently visiting them from Nova Scotia and who are scheduled to return home on Thursday. Baden-Powell Sunday was observed observed in the Janetville charge as well as throughout a greater part of the Western world. A special service for Cubs, Brownies, Guides and Scouts was held at the Janetville Janetville United Church Sunday a.m. with several of our Yelverton children also participating participating in their service. Mr. and Mrs. Alan Gundry of Barrie were weekend guests of Brenda and Terry Malcolm and family. A special family birthday dinner was held on Sunday evening at the home of Eileen Howard and Candice Malcolm in honour of Brenda's, (and Todd's birthdays. birthdays. ! I •Several (local entertainers participated in the Night for Lovers of Country Music held in the Lindsay Academy Theatre on Saturday night. These included Lana Malcolm and her friend Glen Warbur- ton and Mr. Joe Aylward and his band - The Yelverton Express. Joe Aylward, who lives in the Hamlet of Yelverton, Yelverton, south of the four corners, has recently emerged as a musician of some renown. Already, he has a record album published which we have heard over the Peterborough Peterborough radio station on several occasions. We wish all our aspiring musicians continued continued success in this their chosen field and voice our community pride in their musical accomplishments. Joe with a supporting cast of his guitar and a Maple Tree made last week's pictorial of the Lindsay Post's - "Postvision." "Postvision." Welcome home to Murray Malcolm and Ann who returned returned home from a three-week vacation to Florida on Saturday Saturday evening. They report a most enjoyable holiday motoring motoring with their van to the southern extremity of Florida, spending 5 - 6 days in Key West. They toured the Everglades, Everglades, visited Mr. Stanley Malcolm and Mr. Bert McMullin in Dover. Also called on Norma and Don Frew and on the way home called on the Osborne McMullens in Tenessee. They also called on several relatives relatives in Michigan including Murray's Aunt Tillie Phelp in Detroit. On their way home they also dropped in at Mr. and Mrs. Howard Phelps in Toronto. Ann reports that with the exception of a couple of days, the weather was excellent excellent although scarcely warm enough for swimming except in heated pools. Two local ladies are currently currently sunning their buns (we presume) in sunny Hawaii, having departed this past week for that destination. More information on their goings and comings in near future. Congratulations are extended extended to the Lindsay Muskies Hockey Team on coming from behind on Sunday afternoon from a 3 - 0 game deficit to bounce back and defeat the Little Britain team by a 7 - 3 score. This was definitely a Gordie Corneil game as their captain not only had a hat- trick but also got the go ahead goal with a 4th goal penalty shot goal that set the scene for their win. Congratulations to Mr. James Kloepfer of Bethany on being elected Chairman of the Insurance Company Brokers for this region. Quite an honour for Jim. WESLEYVILLE NEWS Rev. Gordon Rutherford's message at Welcome United Church on Sunday morning, Feb. 19th, concerned concerned the story of Nehemiah who was the power behind the re-build- ing of Jerusalem walls. The man's faithfulness to God coupled with his dedication and ability to organize, were sufficient to galvanize a dispirited people into a major reclamation job, not only of the city walls but of the people's own crumbling moral being. The children's story reminded reminded them and their elders elders too, how fortunate we are to read our Bibles without without interference. The choir's anthem was "Therefore "Therefore cheer Thee, God is near Thee". On March 4th we are going to hear much more of the choir's singingand leading leading in song at the hymn sing night at Welcome. The offering offering was received by Clarence Clarence Nichols, Glen Thompson, Robert Dinner and Dennis Croft. Albert Woodruff greeted the congregation congregation at the door. Next Sunday's service will be held in the Sunday School room in order to view a film on the programme for Vision Vision in Mission. It's always pleasant to hear news of the younger members of the area who have gone elsewhere to work and have been successful successful in their career. At the concert in Cobourg put on by the Canadiana Singers, Singers, the notes for the pro gram were prepared by Dr. Diane McConnell who teaches in Toronto University. University. Diane is a native of Morrish and her friends and former neighbours are glad to hear of her. This strange weather for February continues; it seems amazingthatso much water from rain and melting snow has completely disappeared disappeared from ponds around the house. It is good to know that a good supply of moisture moisture has gone into the ground. Crows and starlings have made their appearance appearance from their winter hiding hiding place in some sheltered woods and the regular birds at the feeder are not so attentive attentive there. A fine red tailed hawk was seen the other day, and for him hunting hunting should be good on bare fields. A woolly bear caterpillar caterpillar was seen crawling down the middle of the pavement last Monday, too. He must have come from his deep freeze and unlike the groundhog decided to stay out. Ken Dinner, Archie Ford and son-in-law Chas. Henderson Henderson of Oshawa went north to Rabbit Lake last Monday, Feb. 13th to do a bit of ice fishing. They came home on Tuesday for the ice was covered with water. Rabbit Lake is 60 miles north of North Bay. Charlene Austin with her family attended the Baden- Powell service at St. Paul's Church in Port Hope on Sunday afternoon, Feb. 19th. She was the flag carrier carrier for the first Welcome group.
