On Wednesday evening the shocking news reached Orono and areas of the untimely passing of an old friend, the Rev. Basil Long. A long time resident of 23 years, in our midst had been suddenly called to his rest. Rev. Long had moved to Fenelon Falls after his retirement retirement from the ministry here but never really quit working. At the time of his death, he was assistant minister at Cambridge Street United Church, Lindsay, and still actively counselling and visiting visiting hospitals and rest homes. The very large funeral was held Saturday, July 30th, from Cambridge Street United .Church. His many friends throughout throughout the area will be pleased to hear that Mr. Floyd Nicholson has been transferred to Lindsay Lindsay hospital and is improving since his accident. Little Miss Becky Kimmett is spending this week with her grandmother, Mrs. Dorothy Bailey, and her brother Joel is staying with his uncle, Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Bailey. Orono United Church News An excellent representation from Newcastle, Orono and Kirby congregations welcomed welcomed our minister Rev. and - Mrs. Wayne Wright back from holidays. The Sunday morning service was held in Kirby Church. Special prayers were given for Norma Long and family, and to the family of the late Charles Glenney. Rev. Wright mentioned the very lovely cross at the front of Kirby Church that their church family had dedicated to the faithful service of Rev. Basil Long only three years ago. The beautiful choir anthem "Because He Lives" was much enjoyed. Next Sunday, August 7th, the service will be in Orono United for all three churches. Rev. Stiles, Newcastle, is now on vacation until Aug. 29 and during.this period, Rev. Wright will be on call at 983- 5502 at the office or 983-5208 for any pastoral calls, Birthdays celebrated are Mary Forrest, Aug. 2 (Kirby) and Vilda Cowan July 30 (Orono). Remember all horticulture annual shows are this month, Orono Society is slated for Thurs. Aug. 11 and Durham Gladiolus Society is Sat. Aug. 13. The World Council of Churches The World Council of Churches is meeting in Vancouver, Vancouver, British Columbia July 24th to Aug. 10, 1983.
