On Sunday, July 31, I happened to turn my radio on and behold Gary Herrema, Durham Region Chairman, -'.was talking with John White. 1 They were discussing Durham : ".Region's chances of getting a > Domed Stadium. He did men- ■ tion Oshawa, Whitby, Picker- ling, but never even mentioned -Newcastle. - Where were Newcastle's representatives when this was discussed at the Region? As the taxpayers sure cannot pay for this alone, it must be the province that will have to pay and as Newcastle has a lot of land which is owned by the ^ Province, Darlington Park for one is a good example which has good rail and road connec- ■ tions now and is in Newcastle. ' As far as Durham Region having one of the largest ; industries here, I am sure -Gary knows that G.M. was i located in Oshawa long betore ; Durham Region was ever - formed. Also, the large sewer plant that he was discussing is - located, I do believe, in York - region. In regards to the nine ; million dollar sewer plant which was built at Bowmanville Bowmanville to serve more housing, industry, and commercial enterprises, what has happened happened in Newcastle? Would it be the council and the local planners want all development to go East instead instead of West? This may be what has happened happened to some commercial enterprises which would have provided more jobs for our taxpayers for our citizens instead instead of having to go to Oshawa; also a good tax revenue for Newcastle. I also take my hat off to the Mayors of Oshawa and Whitby Allan Pilkey and Bob Atters- ley and their Councillors for the work in trying to get results results for Durham Region such as getting more commercial and industry for their taxpayers. taxpayers. What has our Mayor and Council done in this regard? I am sure they believe believe in free enterprise. I understand that our Mayor did mention that he would support a Dome Stadium at a local meeting. However, I do believe believe it was Mayor Jack Anderson of Pickering who first brought this on Regional Council floor not the Mayor of Newcastle.
