The fare hike will see GO Transit's two-part pricing formula change from a fixed base of 35 cents plus 5.2 cents per kilometer travelled to 40 cents plus 5.7 cents per kilo- • meter. In approving the., increase, GO's board noted that the 9.8 percent hike not /only conforms conforms with the rules of the Provincial Cabinet Committee on Administered Prices, but in fact under those rules it could have been as high as 12.3 percent. The committee's rules allow crown agencies to pass along to their customers anticipated cost increases and GO's contract payments with the companies which operate its trains and buses are expected expected to rise by the higher figure. However, GO has chosen to eliminate from the equation increased wage payments to the contractors in excess of the 5 percent ceiling imposed on Provincial employees, employees, thus bringing the final figure down.. GO Transit Chairman Lou Parsons told the board that adusting the apportionment of the charges does nothing to alter the overall cost of operating operating the system, "The bills still come in and they have to be paid. What isn't covered by operating revenues must be paid out of the Provincial treasury. It becomes a question question of how much of the cost of the ride should be paid by the passenger and how much by all the taxpayers of Ontario through the general tax levy," said Mr. Parsons. Forecasts suggest that with this fare increase in place, about 53 percent of GO's operating costs will be paid by revenues, leaving some $50 million to be picked up by the Province. SHOPPERS DRUG MART Oshawa Festival Singers Tour British Isles The Oshawa Festival Singers are excited about their upcoming British tour. A choir of fifty teen-age girls, they sing under the direction of Elsie Drygala, Oshawa. (Tour June 26-July 12). Flying to Prestwick, Scotland, Scotland, the choir was to be met by billeting families. A joint concert with the Killermont Children's Choir who toured in Canada recently, and sang in Knox Presbyterian Church', was staged on June 27 at Bearsden, Glasgow. On Canada Day the OFS will be singing at the Princess Castle Gardens Bandshell in Edinburgh. A highlight of the trip will be participation by OFS soloists in the Musical Eisteddford, International Music Festival in Llangollen, North Wales. The following soloists will be competing in the International Singer of the Year category: Irene deJong, Pat Dabroshin- sky, Jackie Dunn, Janet Holton, Gwyneth Hughes, ' Kelly King, Allyson McHardy, Cindy Weldon. This festival draws musicians from all over the world and will be a real experience for the girls. Singing with the Traeth Male Voice Choir in Wales and the Glasgow Phoenix Choir as well as a reception at Canada House in London rounds out the scheduled concerts. The flight home is on July 23 from Gatwick Airport, London, England. Official souvenir programs to be used overseas are available available here, as well, at $1 each through the choir families. Mayor Allan Pilkey has sent along greetings from the City of Oshawa to the Lord Provost of Glasgow and the Mayor of the Isle of Anglesey in North Wales where the choir was received.
