LETTER TO THE EDITOR Alan Tibbies 166 Simpson Avenue Bowmanville Dear Mr. James In last week's edition you printed a letter from Tony Day regarding the condition of the town's soccer fields. As a coach of one of the teams, I would like to add my own views to Tony's very accurate, but understated, criticism of our local politicians. Tony didn't say how often the kids have to play in ankle deep mud because the last patch of grass disappeared years ago. He didn't mention the 12" deep hole in the middle of the field which could easily snap a child's ankle, nor the exposed steel sewer pipe that, one day, will surely rip some kid's leg open. I feel that it won't be until the kids of today become tomorrow's tomorrow's politicians that there will be any marked improvement, improvement, There is a prevailing prevailing apathy among local politicians politicians towards soccer because because they were never exposed exposed to the game when they were young. But, like it or not, soccer is the world's most popular sport and it is coming to Canada. It is a fact that there are more kids registered to play soccer in this country than there are to play hockey. Our leaders don't listen to one or two oddballs like Tony or myself but they would be forced to take notice if the parents of the town's 400 registered registered players (and hundreds not registered) were to complain. complain. I strongly urge these parents to write to town council council demanding not only an improvement to today's fields but also a commitment to providing more facilities in the future. Respectfully, Alan Tibbies. No one knows the heartache of being over weight, or the happiness of losing and reaching reaching goal, until they have been down that road. If you know someone who has a weight problem, encourage them to lose, and when they lose even a small amount, give them a boost with a complimènt and urge them on. Tell them about TOPS. We can help them help themselves by "Taking Oft Pounds Sensibly." TOPS No. 0N870,, meets at the Lions Centre on Thursday evenings. Weigh-in starts at 6:30 p.m. and the meeting at 7:30 p.m. If this time isn't suitable, there are other TOPS groups in our area. Summer months are a hard time for some of us to diet, because we love that barbecued barbecued food. Eat smaller portions, portions, and don't smother the meats in barbecue sauce. Cut off excess fat. Use low-cal light dressings for salads. Eat fresh fruit salads, and raw vegetables, like carrots and celery or cucumbers. Try this fruit salad for a nice light lunch. Segment a grapefruit, dice one apple and one pear, segment an orange, and if on hand halve about a dozen grapes and put these all in a sealable container. If you like sweetener, use one of the many brands of artificial sweeteners that are available today. Add this, and mix the fruit after squeezing the excess juice from the grapefruit grapefruit and orange skins into the container. Split this in half for lunches, for two days. Have one slice of crisp bread, and a non sweetened iced tea of club soda (with a twist of lime or lemon) with the salad, for a 'sensible diet lunch. Weight loss takes willpower, sensible planning, advice of a physician and a good attitude about ones self before it can become a reality. Good luck to all those whom endeavor to give it a good try, and congratulations congratulations to all those whom reach their goal.
