YELVERTON NEWS Congratulations are extended extended to Mr. Howard Malcolm who was elected President of the Canadian Pork Council at their Annual Meeting in Regina, Sask. this week. Associations. The concerns of the Council are those of National scope - Grading and Inspection, Inspection, a National stabilization program, animal welfare, and Export of Pork abroad, and other items that mav to directed to it. The greatest challenge according to Howard, is to mold the various diverse opinions of the individual individual provinces into a workable policy for all Canada. National stabilization is a real challenge - to provide a fair return to all producers yet not to encourage a climate to induce overproduction on the other hand. The Executive for the Canadian Pork Council for the coming year consists of Tom Meredeth - Past-President, Past-President, Howard Malcolm, Ontario; B. Vaags, Manitoba; Laverne Voiding, Sask. Howard, in his new capacity will be attending the "Outlook Conference" at Ottawa this week where Government will provide their version of what the following year holds in production and prices. This conference will be followed by a Land Use Seminar. Howard and Eileen were somewhat surprised to return from Regina where there was several inches of snow, back to balmy Ontario. Miss Candy Malcolm returned last Sunday to Malton as per schedule from a 4 - 5 week holiday in Australia. Her first week, a combination of business and pleasure, was spent in Sydney where she was provided a fitting example of Australian hospitality by Margaret and Ron Addison and family. The Addisons took Candy around the local area of Sydney, showing her the high-lights of their city. Margaret Addison is the former Margaret Steele, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Billy Steele formerly of Nestleton. On a personal note, Margaret was a former classmate of ours where we attended Blackstock High School more years ago than either of us would care to admit. Candy also visited her cousin Valerie Malcolm and the Neilson family in Melbourne, Melbourne, Australia. Other points of interest included Alice Springs in mid Australia and the Great Barrier Reef in northern Australia. Mr. and Mrs. Terry Malcolm accompanied by Mr, and Mrs. Trevor Nesbitt, Mr. and Mrs. Neil Vivian and Mr. and Mrs. Mike Hughes, are scheduled to see and hear "Kenny Rodgers" in concert at the Maple Leaf Gardens on Sunday evening. Yelverton U.C.W. following their December meeting held their Annual Christmas Pot Luck Dinner and Social evening this week. Around 40 ladies and their hubbies enjoyed the culinary delights offered on the occasion. On Sunday a.m. the Youth Group took charge of the Yelverton Church Service with a white gift service as well. News Editors: Chris Kelly, and Sam Laskaris All three B.H.S. boys' basketball teams have commenced regular season play. The season began yesterday with Bowmanville visiting O'Neill Collegiate in Oshawa. Results will be printed in next week's issue. Last week was a very busy week for all three teams as they competed in various exhibition games and tournaments. tournaments. The midget team led by Rod Tukker and Jay Kelly won both of its games. On Monday evening they defeated Weldon from Lindsay by a score of 49 - 23. On Wednesday night they were victorious once again as they outclassed Clarke 45 -17. The junior team competed competed in a tournament in Port Hope on the weekend. Although B.H.S. came out on tne short end of two close games, I'm confident the team will improve throughout the season. Unlike the midget team, the seniors were defeated by the Weldon Wildcats and the Clarke Raiders respectively. On Monday at B.H.S. Weldon came out with a 37-34 victory. Top scorers for Bowmanville were Ralph Brown with twelve points and Chris DeSouza and Ken Daize who chipped in six points apiece. Wednesday's game with Clarke was a seesaw seesaw affair with Clarke emerging victorious by a single basket. The final score was 51 - 49. Chris DeSouza led the Bowmanville attack with a twenty-point performance. Tobin Rowe and Tony Wind connected by Steve Brown with five points. Eric Peebles and Ralph Brown had two baskets each and Ken Daize rounded out the B.H.S. scoring with two points. It took an extra end for Gord Baker's Bowmanville rink to win the Labatt's Las Vegas bonspiel on Saturday at Bowmanville Country Club. The winners are pictured here: Gord and Rosemary Baker, Robin and Jean MacDonald and at right, Marilyn Kowal of Bowmanville Travel who presented plane tickets to Las Vegas to the winners.
