Bowmanville, October 20,1982 Section Two Durham Agri-News By Rod Stork, Acting Agricultural Representative War on Warbles: Warbles are an enemy of the farmer and the livestock industry. They reduce production of meat and milk and in addition, they cause damage to the meat and the hide. These pests rob farmers of many dollars of expected income, both at the farm and in the marketplace. Farmers can reduce the losses brought about by warbles warbles very easily through the use of systemic insecticides. Systemic insecticides are applied to the skin and are absorbed into the blood stream to kill the warble grubs before they reach the animal's back. The systemics available today'will give 90 to 95 per cent control. Despite an increase in the use of systemic controls, it is estimated that over 90 per cent of the cattle in Ontario are still infected to a certain degree. In economic terms, this can be very costly. It is estimated that on an animal having 1 to 5 grubs the loss to the packer is more than $23.00. This loss is passed back down the line to the producer. In addition, the producer has reduced weight gains on his cattle, possible physical injury and higher stress levels in cattle infested with grubs. Systemic ' insecticides should be applied in September, September, October and November when control can be most effective. Treatment is not recommended in December, January and February. The cost of treating animals using systemics will range from 20 to 40 cents per head. Remember, when using the systemics to always read the product label, follow instructions, instructions, note precautions and estimate weights accurately. For more information on Warble Control in livestock; contact the Agricultural Office and ask for a copy of the Factsheet, "War on Warbles" or contact your local livestock supply dealer for further information. Remember, control of warbles means more profit not more cost. Soil Test For Next Year's Crop: The fall harvest season certainly has been slow. Many • farmers are anxiously waiting for corn to dry down or soybeans soybeans to mature. One of the jobs that normally normally gets left until after everything everything else is done is taking Soil Samples. Checking out yqur fields to determine nutrient levels is the first step to planning your next crop. Soil Testing services services are offered by many agri-business firms and through the Provincial Soil Test Laboratory in Guelph, operated by the University of Guelph and the Ontario Ministry Ministry of Agriculture and Food. No matter where you have your analysis done, it is vital that it be done hopefully every year, but at least every two years for each field on your farm. 1 With input costs of growing crops increasing each year and commodity prices at a low level, it is vital that your fertility program be based on the best possible information rather than general recommendations recommendations or on calculated "estimates". Soil testing can be easy if you make use of a core sample tube, a pail and a little bit of time to walk your fields and obtain good representative samples from each field. Samples to be sent to the Soil Test Lab in Guelph can be sent in boxes available from the agriculture office. Information Information Sheets should be completed , for each field indicating past crop history, manure application, if any, and the amounts of legume that might be plowed down. With this information and an analysis of the soil, a good fertility program can be developed developed for each field and each crop grown on your farm. Plan now to take soil samples this fall and avoid the rush that happens each spring. Futures Marketing Seminar: A two-day seminar on'the use of the futures market market in marketing agricultural products will be held on December 16th and 17th at the agricultural office in Lindsay. Dr. Larry Martin of the University of Guelph will conduct the two-day Seminar. A limited number of applicants applicants can be accepted for this Seminar. Cost for the 2-day program is $40.00 and this includes a noon meal each day. The Seminar will look at what the futures market is, how it can be best used by today's farm operation and the problems that you might encounter.
