) ) l United Way Holds 5th Annual Turkey Trot Hundreds of runners take off to start the 1982 United Way Turkey Trot from Durham College. This is the fifth year that the event has been held to raise funds and support for the United Way campaign. Prior to the race on Sunday, the Whitby Sea Cadet Band entertained the large crowd of supporters. Glad to hear Mrs. Dave Skerratt is feeling better after an unfortunate "fall on her verandah last weekend, which required about 10 stitches under her right elbow at Bowmanville Memorial Hospital. 1 About 6 ladies from Kendal W.I. attended the Solina fun fair last Tuesday afternoon. There was a very good attendance. The entertainment entertainment for the afternoon was by four branches from the District of Durham East. Kendal was the first on the progr'am | with a TV commercial ad for dog food followed ■ by an old pioneer by the!name of Jake McGillicuddy 1 who came to settle in Kendal who was being interviewed by the TV ad man, played by Janet Dyke- man, advertising dog food played by Helen Henderson, old Jake played by Del Gosson. Next on the program was Maple Grove with a skit on "Greycloud" and "Sunbeam" meaning the negative and positive attitude. Then came Blackstock with a skit on "let's not be hasty in judgment" followed with a nice piano selection by Mrs. Oshworth from the Bowmanville Bowmanville branch. There was a Penny sale draw followed by a country general store tablé and bake sale. The afternoon closed with a delicious lunch of sandwiches and cakes and coffee and tea downstairs. Mr. Dave Elliott spent last Thursday with his grandparents, grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Reg. Elliott and Friday with his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Harley Elliott. He just recently returned from Cyprus, Greece after serving in the forces for 6 months. He will be returning to Shilo, Manitoba, his former post, after spending a vacation with his mom and dad, Mr. and Mrs. Neil Elliott in Maple Leaf, Ont. The ladies from Kendal who attended were Mrs. Reg. Elliott, Janet Dykeman, Helen Henderson, Barb Holland, Neta Ransbury and Dei Gosson. and she had as the guest speaker Mrs. Roxy Barnes from the Community Care in Bowmanville. The luncheon was provided by hostesses Miss Catherine Stewart and Mrs. Dora Youngman. The Kendal United Church had as their guest Mr. Bailey last Sunday (rather than Mr. Dey which was mentioned in the Kendal news a few weeks ago). He chose as his sermon "The Builders" taken from sermon on the mount. They had a very lovely duet of the hymn "Amazing Grace" by Pamela and Patricia Frank accompanied by Helen Wood at the organ who played for the whole service. Mrs. Don Peddar's mother Mrs. Savage is a visitor here with Mr. and Mrs. Peddar for a few weeks. The next Card Party at the Kendal Orange Hall will be on the 29th of October. There were about 70 people from around the area with the Tom Clark bus tour from Bowmanville who had a very enjoyable day at the Kitchener's Octoberfest last Wednesday. They were entertained entertained by a band from Germany and a dancing group from Austria. Everyone enjoyed the German food and whole day. Those who went from Kendal were Mr. and Mrs. Dave Skerratt, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Ransbury and Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stapleton. We were all very sorry to hear about the passing of Mr. Ken Dykeman's father from Toronto last week of a heart attack. Funeral was last Friday. (Intended for Oct. 9) Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stapleton spent Wednesday and Thursday of last week with Mr. and Mrs. Roy Vienot in Creemore, Ont. Callers with Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stapleton on Thanksgiving Thanksgiving day were Mr. and Mrs. Vance Cooper with grandchildren grandchildren from Oshawa and Mr. and Mrs. Danny Bathgate also from Oshawa. Mrs. Del Gosson and Mr. and Mrs. John Gosson motored to Sturgeon Falls, Ont. on Saturday for the Genore and Navid wedding from Scarborough, Ont. They returned on Sunday. Mrs. D. Gosson had her family at home for Thanksgiving Thanksgiving dinner, her daughters Mrs. Gerry Turner and Mr. Turner and son Jesse, also Mr. and Mrs. Jim Martin and sons Eryn and Ryan, Oshawa. Last Saturday on Oct. 9 about 30 friends of Mr. and Mrs Orval Holland gathered at the home of Mr. and Mrs. D. Bunker in Kendal for a surprise party on their 25th wedding anniversary which was on Oct. 6. The evening was spent darjcing, music etc. A delicious lunch including an anniversary dake was served at the end of the evening. After which a money tree was presented to the couple.
