SOCCER RESULTS By Dick Budel Before we start on the events of the past week there is an item from last week's column which requires clarification. clarification. In that column reference reference was made to a "donny- brook". That turned out to be an unfortunate choice of words as it seemed to imply that there was a general free- for-all. That was not the case, in fact the players from both teams were well-behaved indeed. The game was called because the referee took exception to an objection from the Newcastle side of the field. There were no players involved, involved, nor representatives of the Rovers. It my column left a different impression I hereby offer my apologies to the parties concerned. Now on to more mundane matters. The K of C Squirt II squad hosted the Orono II squad on Monday, August 23, their second meeting in 4 nights. The Colts were victorious victorious once again, but this time by a mere 2-0 margin as the Orono squad shows continued improvement. Colts scorers were Adam Mohns and Dennis Ricard while Mark Ferguson earned the shut-out. August 24 saw Rovers defeat the Port of Newcastle Mosquitoes Mosquitoes 2-0 right in Newcastle. Rover goals came from David Robinson and Steve McCullough. McCullough. Chris Hay earned the shut-out. The Town Sport Mosquitoes fared better as they posted a 9-0 victory over Orono II in Orono. Colt scorers came from Willy McGarvey (3), Richard Maki (2), Mila Come to the Port Perry Fair Sept. 4-5-6 Seethe new'82 and '83 Snowmobiles and Tri-Motos No Snow Show This Year! Be sure and see us at the Fair! Asselstine's Yamaha Tait (2), Derek Rogers (1) and Scott Rekker (1). Tyrone Sluy- mers preserved the shut-out. Squirt night (Wednesday, ; Aug. 25) wasn't nearly as successful as both Colts squads were defeated. The K of C Squirt I team lost 4-0 at K rone (no details available) ile K of C Squirts II lost 3-1 in Hampton. Tne names of the Hampton scorers were not- available; Craig Lockhart scored the lone Colt goal. August 26 was a day of mixed fortunes. First the K of C Atoms held a half-time lead of 4-0 over Tyrone II only to surrender 3 goals in the second half for a 4-3 final score. The Kraco Contracting Atoms were subjected to a 9-0 pounding by Tyrone I. Mercifully Mercifully the details have been lost. The Town Sports Mosquitoes Mosquitoes continued their high- scoring ways as they trounced Hampton 9-1 in Hampton. The oddity in this game was that Hampton scored first as the Colts were slow getting started. started. Willy McGarvey (4), Derek Rogers (2), Chris Mas- kell (1), Richard Maki (1) and Mike. Tait (1) Scored for the Colts. By the time that this column reaches the door steps the play-offs will be underway. Because of the structure of the play-offs it is impossible to predict where the various teams are going to play. I would caution all players, and their parents, to check with the coaches as to where the next game will be played. The only certainty is that the Squirts and Pee Wees will be S ing Mondays and nesdays while the Atoms and Mosquitoes play on Tuesdays Tuesdays and Thursdays, If last year's play-offs can be taken as a yard stick then the upcoming action should prove exciting and entertaining. entertaining. Why not come down to your local soccer field and catch a piece of the action, the players will provide a lot of entertainment. King Garden Soccer Club Loses Close One to Oshawa On Tuesday, August 17th at Oshawa Civic: Fields, the Bowmanville King Garden Restaurant Senior Soccer team were entertained by the Oshawa Rangers at 7 p.m. Previous meetings between the teams were split with a 2-0 victory to Bowmanville in the exhibition season, and a 5-0 defeat in the regular season. Rangers have proven themselves recently to be one of the most improved teams in the league, and their berth in the Labatt's Cup final on August 21st proves their talent. Bowmanville. have earned themselves the unfortunate reputation of giving up early goals, but started this game strongly and pressed the Rangers constantly in the opening 20 minutes. Good goaltending by Wally Seto who stepped in when our regular keeper was unable to attend, kept Oshawa at bay, and strong work by the defense of Bill Espie, Dave Brown, Mark Mathews and Bernie Lewis robbed Oshawa of their goal scoring opportunities. . Bowmanville opened the scoring after a long throw from John Cook was crossed over from the right wing by Geoff Gavey. Sid Ryan scored from the cross with a spectacular overhead bicycle kick to give the Bowmanville team a well deserved lead. Continued strong play by the team saw several close chances and the half ended with Bowmanville clearly the stronger side. The second half saw Rangers pressing a little more strongly and they were rewarded by a goal from Tony Wolsterholme after ten minutes of play when the awkwardly spinning ball eluded several of the Bowmanville players and gave Rangers an easy present of the ball on the goal line. Determined efforts to come back into the game saw Bowmanville thwarted repeatedly by a combination of back luck and hazardous officiating. On several occasions free kicks and corner kicks were waved away by the referee for reasons unknown. A failure to clear away a homeless looking ball just inside the penalty area saw Oshawa take a 2-1 lead when goalkeeper Wally Seto dove full length to stop a strong low shot but was unable to prevent the ball from slowly rolling over the line. Good points to mention were the excellent turnout of players, and a strong work rate from each member of the team. Keep up the good work and Bowmanville will finish the season in a creditable position in their first year.
