It is ungracious in a time of sorrow sorrow sometimes to speak of realities, but there are courses of conduct so utterly foolish that a newspaper fails in its duty not to bring the example squarely to the attention of its readers who might perchance be equally careless or uninformed. There is a science in safety, as well as in everything else in the world. People can learn how to handle gasoline and gunpowder safely, how to climb scaffoldings and cross railroad tracks, and do other things safely. One of the physicians addressing the delegates of the Institute of Homèopat-hy at Atlantic City, N.J., said that if those who had reached maturity would eat less they would live longer. This is not a new or" startling axiom, but it . is a good thing to have it repeated by one whose. duty and experience gave him the right to .speak by authority. The physician who made this declaration declaration also urged the establishment establishment of a Bureau of Dietetics for the purpose of studving the relation relation of food to health and disease. It would be well if people generally generally were to pay more attention to this important subject. We hear a great deal about the evils caused by drink but not half enough concerning concerning the effects of overeating. It was pointed out at one of the meetings that medical science has concerned itself greatly with the problems of infancy and childhood and has not given sufficient attention attention to the problems of maturity. Nearly everybody realizes that less food is needed after reaching maturity maturity than during the younger and more active years, but most persons persons continue -to eat as heartily as when young. The doctors deserve credit for calling attention to this fact, although although by so doing they may be depriving depriving themselves of part of their practice. Startling Charges are Made Against Orphan Asylums in Europe. Some alarming statements respecting respecting the traffic in children have been publicly made by Sister Arendt of Stuttgart, Germany. According to this woman, who was formerly a policewoman policewoman at Stuttgart, there exists in organized traffic of a particularly shameful kind of children, who are said to be hired out to beggarg and let out to work for profit and for immoral immoral purppses. The abuses of baby farming are also mentioned, says the London Times. This arrangement is directed m par- ticular against Germany and other continental countries, but as the traffic traffic in children was stated by Sister Arendt to be just as great in England, information has been obtained from the best sources in 'London in order to check the charges. Except in regard regard to the evils of baby farming no confirmation of the sweeping indictment indictment case can be found. Mrs. Bram- well Booth, who was for many years' at the head of the woman's rescue work of the Salvation Army, does not believe that there is to any considerable considerable extent organized traffic, of the kind described. The same information information was forthcoming from the National National Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to children." Sister Arendt told of the Russian institution for crippled children where the police found no fewer than 78 little ones who had been maimed in order that they might be let out as beggars. Cases of this kind, however, find no paralel in England. Isolated cases sometimes appear, in the police courts, such as that of a child whose eyes were poisoned by its mother in order to awaken public Man of the Moment in Europe Is Britain's Foreign Secretary. Sir Edward Grey, Britain's secretary secretary for Foreign Affairs, and probably next Liberal Premier, is to-day one of the outstanding figures figures in Europe, on account of the part that he played in the present Austrian-Servian affair, and his efforts to maintain the peace of Europe. To understand Sir Edward s charaeter, it is necessary to bear in mind two things. He is an aristocrat aristocrat of aristocrats, and the greatest living authority on fly-fishing. . The first explains why he is in politics.. The second reveals the temperament temperament of the man. He was also once the amateur tennis champion of England. There is no nobler blood in Britain than his. He inherited inherited his title from his grandfather, grandfather, Sir George Grey. As far back as English history can be. traced the Greys of Northumberland Northumberland have helped make history. He is 52 years old, has been Foreign Foreign Secretary for eight years, and is the only commoner decorated with the noble order of the Garter,, a special honor for which King George singled him out in 1912. Cold and Correct. He is English of the English, cold reserved, correct in pose and I sympathy for begging purposes, but consistent in poise. TT ^~ ------ -- - - nffpnRP Grandfather Grizzly. Little Bear's parents had never told" him about his Grandf athei Grizzly, but Auntie Cinnamon s twins told Little Bear that Grandfather Grandfather Grizzly talked like this: 1 'Gr-gr-gr-ger-ger-row-row !" only only they made it sound like the north wind in November. Libtle Bear shivered with fear. That pleased Auntie Cinnamon's twins so much that they told Little Bear one story after another, just to see him look frightened. But the joke was on them, because, while they were trying to scare ■ Little Bear, they had frightened themselves themselves so badly that they jumped every time the friendly" owl spoke in the forest. Of course Little Bear straightway asked Father Bear many questions about Grandfather Grizzly and his folks. At last he said, "If I ever meet a grizzly, up I go, up I go. to the top of the highest tree !" "No, indeed ! You shall not be a coward !" answered Fattier Bear. "If you ever see a grizzly coming, even though it be Grandfather Grizzly himself, -ou walk on and meet" him." "Meet him!" echoed Little Bear, in faint tones. "Yes Son Bear, you meet him. The army has a peace strength Of 23,000 men and a war strength of 150.000. The navy consists of six fairly modern small coast defence ironclads, three old ones, and four small unarmored cruisers. Kaiser Would Have Had Far Larger Army Next Year. That Kaiser William would have 5,400,000 trained soldiers to turn loose, upon mankind by the end of 1915 had the present crisis not been precipitated precipitated is one of the .startling facts which military authorities state. And although Germany's ruler even now has 4,000,000 men in arms, the rest of the world' may take some comfort that MserYfcw army Organization scheme had" not been in operation a little longer. The remarkable military activity of Germany which has been worrying the rest of Europe for the past| few years culminated in the law of' 1913, of which the main principle was to largely increase the number of recruits recruits joining yearly by lowering the age standard. By this plan less reliance reliance had to be placed on the reserve elements. More important even than -these provisions with - their immense numerical increase, however, was the fact that mobilization would be enormously enormously expedited thereby and a huge army of trained men thrown into the ' field at a moment's notice. Sinister and significant on top of this, to all hut those who blindly refused refused to see, was the gathering together together of gold and silver by Germany during the past two years. The war chest--cash immediately available for mobilization--was doubled in gold, increased increased from $30,000,000 to $60,000,- 000, while no less than $30,000,000 in silver had been hoarded up. -- *-- through some anxious days and dark. Prof. Erich Harnack, the famous Jena (Germany) pharmacist, announces announces the discovery of a new disease. It Is a sort of chronic copper poisoning poisoning which may prove fatal. It is After that, Little Bear did not feel so ha.pp.y as usual in the big woods. He dreaded the thought that he might see a grizzly coming and be obliged to meet him and say, i "Good morning, sir, good morning!" morning!" . - One day soon afterward, Little Bear'fell asleep on a shelf of rock ; he was warm and comfortable in the sunshine. When he awoke, he saw below him a huge bear patiently patiently trying to remove a bunch of burs from the back of his neck ; the burs were sticking tight in his fur. Little Bear might easily have slipped off the back of the rock and have run softly away ; instead, he offered to help the stranger. "I j think I can get those burs out of vour coat," said he. Straightway the big bear turned a troubled face upward. "Then do so-," he advised. "Jump down on my back, and use your sharp claws, young cub, and be quick about it. His tones were rough, but Little Bear did not blame the old fellow for that. When the burs were out, Little Bear jumped to the ground. , , "I.thank you, sir," said the stranger, rising and shaking his huge body. "What's your name V ' "Mv name is Little Bear, of the ancient family of the Tree Bears, if you please," wa>s the prompt and fearless answer. "I am pleased to have met you," remarked the big bear, scratching j his ear with hi*s hind paw. "Tell | your father and yo*ur mother that 1 old Grandfather Grizzly says you are a brave young cub. If I can ever be of any use to your ancient family, I shall be glad to help you. Good day. sir!" And off he went through the woods, "slipslop, slipslop,' slipslop,' on his huge flat feet. Little Bear ran home as fast as he could. "What did I tell you V' inquired Father Bear, when he had heard Littie Be air's story. "I'll never be afraid of the grizzlies grizzlies again," answered Little Boar, gavl.v hopping about.
