The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 13, 2006 - 7 MORE LETTERS TO THE EDITOR It is time for City of Halton Voter switches vote because of flip-flopping I'd like to support the excellent letter by Ric Morrow, Former Chair, Halton Region, titled "Is it time for the City of Halton?" It is obvious that it is time. Four levels of govern ment, municipal, regional, provincial and federal is too much and generate over costs and inefficiencies. It would benefit all resi dents; actually the only peo ple who might not favour are the mayors, councillors and some staff who would be reduced. Instead of having four mayors and a regional chair, there would be one City of Halton mayor and 10 (?) councillors, instead of the existing 54. As for staff, there would not be any need to have five City/region managers, or five commissioners of Planning, Community Services, Corporate Services, etc. Besides the reductions of personnel, there would be great improvement in effi ciencies by eliminating one level of government. As example, all roads would be under the development and maintenance of one depart ment; today we have prob lems when roads like Upper Middle and Dorval are regional, but their sidewalks and trails are municipal. Attending low income / at risk residents, it is not clear where the Region's social services end and the munic ipal recreation, libraries and parks begin. The same prob lems arise with the Region's ambulance and police serv ices and the municipal fire and emergency services. Finally, the total popula tion, currently at approxi mately 400,000 and in 20 years at around 700,000, is ideal to still have the bene fits of small local adminis tration, but also the cost/benefit of a larger size. Currently, cities between 600-800,000 are Hamilton, Mississauga, Edmonton, Quebec, Winnipeg, Calgary. It would be great to have all mayors and councillors debate this option, acting with generosity, with a long term vision and really con sidering the benefit of the residents. GIL PENALOSA An Open Letter to Garth Turner, Halton Conservative candidate I wish to congratulate you on your having done some thing that no other Conservative candidate has been able to do, that is to per suade me to vote for you. Of course, you had considA ( ski a t n r u jiO H erable help from your adver sary, Gary Carr, who I voted for previously because he was the sole candidate who sup ported same-sex marriage. Once elected on that premise he then flip-flopped and voted against it when it counted, in spite of what he had promised voters. Now, he is once again in an election and, surprise, he now supports it again. Not this time Gary. Unfortunately (for me) to vote for you I must also vote for Stephen Harper who I in no way respect or support. "I sincerely hope, Mr. Turner, that you will honour your commitment to oppose reopening the debate on this matter of equality. I sincerely hope that you will oppose such actions even if pressured by Mr. Harper. And, I sincerely hope that you will be a man of your word, unlike Mr. Carr. KEVIN S . BEATSON i s H i mi ft!
