16 - The Oakville Beaver, Friday January 13, 2006 RIDE charges were up this holiday season The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) and Burlington Detachment OPP report an increase over last year in the num ber of people charged with impaired driving during the 2005 Christmas/New Year' s RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere) programs. The five-week effort resulted in slightly over 35,000 vehicles being stopped at RIDE locations in Halton by Halton offi cers, while Burlington OPP stopped 21,799 drivers. Although the statistics from RIDE checks are indicative that the significant majority of drivers are acting responsibly and obeying the law, says Sgt. Jeff Corey, Halton Regional Police report that impaired driving/over 80 charges laid during the campaign increased to previous years. In other words, HRPS officers adminis tered 177 roadside screening tests in 2005 and charged seven drivers with being impaired - compared to only three being charged in 2004 and three in 2003. According to Burlington OPP, in 2005 six alcohol-related charges were laid, com pared with three the previous year. Halton also teamed up with OPP for joint services RIDE checks, were accom panied by MADD Halton volunteers for four evenings and utilized the assistance of volunteer auxiliary officers during the December campaign. Regional survey says residents happy with services for seniors Overall, local residents and their families are satisfied with the services Halton Region provides for Halton's sen iors. This is one of the results of a survey the Region recent ly conducted at two of its long-term care facilities -- Allendale and Post Inn Village in Oakville -- and in its adult day programs and supportive housing program. Commissioner of Social and Community Services Adelina Urbanski reported on the survey findings to Halton's health and social services committee Tuesday. Of the responses the Region received back from resi dents at Allendale and Post Inri Village and their families, 94 per cent rated the facilities as `excellent' or `good' places to live. When asked whether they would recommend the facili ty to family and friends, 97 per cent indicated they would. At the Region's supportive housing program sites -- Bonnie Place and Wellington Terrace in Burlington and the Bruce Apartments in Milton -- 97 per cent of survey respondents said they were `very satisfied' or `satisfied' with overall service delivery. When it came to how the program enables them to live as independently as possible, 95 per cent said they were `very satisfied' or `satisfied'. And, 99 per cent said they'd recommend the program to family and friends. Participants in the Region's adult day programs (Milton Place/Friend's Landing) and their family members/care givers were also surveyed, with all who responded saying they'd recommend it to others. In addition, 95 per cent of participants and 100 per cent of family members/caregivers gave the program an overall rating of `very satisfied' or `satisfied'.
