Terry Fox Run Sunday at Coronation continued from p.1 On Sunday (Sept. 18), people across Canada will participate in several run-or-walk events. The run has evolved into the largest fundraising event in support of cancer research in the world, with events taking place in 32 countries across four continents, annually. The Oakville Terry Fox Run will be at Coronation Park, 1426 Lakeshore Rd. W., at 10 a.m. With no entry fee or minimal required donation, organizers are encouraging residents to gather their colleagues, associates, friends, families and social and athletic groups to celebrate and honour their loved ones while raising money for cancer research by walking, biking, boarding, blading, running, pushing a stroller or walking the dog along the lake-side in two-kilometre, 5-km or 10-km routes. The routes will be lined with lawn posters remembering loved ones who have died of cancer. This year marks the 36th year the run/walk has taken place in Oakville. Organizers are challenging the community to raise $182,000 -- $1 for every Oakville resident. Last year, the event raised $117,000. To register, visit terryfox.org and click on the Teams tab or call 1-888-836-9786. More than $700 million has been raised worldwide in Fox's name to fund the most promising and innovative research in Canada. Driver shortage in Halton continued from p.1 Lacroix said most of the 30 routes affected are for smaller buses carrying 10-15 students. Lacroix said last school year, 2015-16, was actually a bit more challenging from a bus driver shortage perspective than the start of this year as school bus company First Student Canada was short 18 drivers. Attridge is the other bus school bus transportation provider in Halton. The bus companies pay the drivers and submit bids to the HSTS. Lacoix said it takes about three weeks to train a school bus driver and that they are paid "definitely above minimum wage," earning about $60-$65 per day for 4-4 ½ hours of work. During the current driver shortage, parents can sign up for delay and cancellation notifications on the HSTS website (haltonbus.ca). A list of bus delays is also posted on the HSTS website. School bus companies are recruiting drivers. Interested applicants can contact: · First Student Canada, Burlington and Oakville (905-335-7010) · Attridge Transportation Inc.
