www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, September 15, 2016 | 30 Chartwell Fall Fest LET'S CELEBRATE THE FALL SEASON TOGETHER! Since moving to their Chartwell home, Rita and Jean-Louis have more time to socialize with friends and participate in their favourite activities. Now you too are invited to meet new people and experience all the season has to offer. CHARTWELL.COM Halton Region can help with mental health challenges In recognition of Worldwide Suicide Prevention Day last Saturday (Sept. 10), Halton Region reminded residents this week of the services it, and many of its community partners, offer to individuals, friends and family in need of mental health supports. Among the several mental health services and initiatives it's involved in, the Halton Region Health Department provides information, programs and resources on a wide variety of mental health topics. "Whether you are a new parent struggling with postpartum depression, or are a teen transitioning to high school or university, Halton Region provides trusted online mental health information and resources," the Region stated in a media release. "Alternatively, dial 311 to speak directly with a Public Health Nurse." Halton Region is also a key partner and supporter of the Halton Suicide Prevention Coalition (HSPC), a group that aims to reduce the stigma associated with suicide and mental illness. HSPC is hosting its Annual Meeting and Community Workshop at the Oakville Conference Centre, 2515 Wyecroft Rd., on Oct. 28 from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. It features two guest speakers -- mental health advocates Dr. Ian Dawe, Chair of the Ontario Hospital Association's Suicide Prevention Standards Task Force, and Mark Henick, Program Manager for Mental Health Works at Canadian Mental Health Association Ontario. Following the meeting is a half-day safeTALK suicide prevention workshop that teaches helpers to identify people with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. The workshop takes place at Halton Regional Centre's Community Room, 1151 Bronte Rd., from 1-4 p.m. The Halton Suicide Prevention Coalition annual meeting and safeTALK training session are open to anyone in Halton interested in attending one or both events. To participate, register online at halton.ca/suicideprevention or dial 311. The registration deadline is Oct. 19.
