Alert bank employee helps foil immigration scam Don't give out any personal information over phone: police by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 9 | Thursday, September 8, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton police are reminding residents to be wary of fraudsters masquerading as government agents after an alert bank employee narrowly foiled a scam recently in Oakville. On the afternoon of Aug. 18, police said an Oakville woman received a call from a man claiming to be an officer with Citizen- ship and Immigration Canada. The caller claimed there were issues with the Oakville woman's immigration paperwork and she needed to immediately pay some kind of penalty fee. Police said the woman was directed to a bank at a plaza at 511 Maple Grove Dr., where she was told to withdraw the funds and then give them to someone waiting in the parking lot. Police said the woman went to the bank as directed, however, during the transaction a bank employee realized what was happening and contacted police. No suspect caught at scene Halton police arrived at the plaza and searched the area for the person who was supposed to pick up the money from the victim, but as no description was available, they were not successful. Police are reminding residents not to give out any personal information over the phone when they get these types of calls. Officers also pointed out Citizenship and Immigration Canada would never request payment in this manner nor would they ask for personal information such as credit card, bank account or passport numbers. Residents are also advised to never let themselves be pressured or bullied into handing over their money. Police said offer to call the person back and check with the institution they say they are from to verify the situation. Halton police are continuing to investigate this Oakville incident and anyone with information is asked to contact the Halton police fraud unit at 905-634-1831 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477). Suspected fraud can be reported to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre at 1-888-4958501. HDSB launches new website The Halton District School Board has launched a new website following both community and staff input. Designed by eSolutionsGroup, the new website, which will use the same web address, www.hdsb.ca, is designed with parents/guardians in mind, according to the board. The new homepage uses the latest web design elements to effectively bring users' attention to important dates, according to a HDSB press release. It will include video options as another way to engage users, and news releases will have a prominent place on the new website to keep users up to date on board decisions, changes and key events and dates. The website will allow users quick access to topics such as Find My Local School, Report a Student Absence and Transportation and Program Accommodation Studies. "We are very proud of our new website and the amount of hard work that went into creating it," said Stuart Miller, HDSB director of education. "Gathering public input prior to designing the site was very important in helping us provide an improved web experience. We thank the pubic for that input. Also, the opinion and feedback board staff provided was instrumental in creating a website everyone can intuitively navigate."
