Town is set to modify celebratory initiatives for Canada's 150th birthday continued from p.1 story of Oakville through the collection of oral histories as told through the creation of an interactive audio visual installation and a site-specific performance piece. While this application was rejected by the federal government in May, Town staff noted in its report to council the Recreation and Cultural Department would continue to leverage existing operating plans and budgets in order to program "modified celebratory initiatives" in 2017 where possible. Another exhibit, titled With Glowing Hearts: Celebrating 1867, will explore how Confederation was celebrated in Oakville 150 years ago. A proposed project is the Canada Pavilion, a community and cultural zone planned for the 2017 Oakville Children's Festival. IT will feature various organizational booths and activities to showcase the experiences of Oakville's many cultural communities. The Town is looking at a two-phased cultural and performance project, dubbed The Tale of the Town of Oakville Project, are also moving forward. It is also asking the Ontario government for funds to hold Canada's Bonus Birthday Bash on New Year's Eve Sunday, Dec. 31, 2017. Council voted last Monday (Aug. 22) to apply for funds from the Ontario 150 Community Celebration Program. Grants of up to $70,000 are available. This funding would cover 75 per cent of the project budget, leaving the Town to cover an additional $23,000. If the funding request is approved, the Town plans to hold the celebration at North Park and Sixteen Mile Sports Complex. Key events would include free public skating inside Sixteen Mile Sports Complex, the temporary installation of an outdoor community rink, a Canadian Food Truck Rally (poutine, macaroni and cheese, BeaveTails), fireworks and more. Council also voted to apply for funds from the Ontario 150 Community Capital Program. Grants of up to $500,000 are available to support the repair, renovation or retrofit of existing community facilities. In the event the Town receives this funding, plans are in place to renovate the Queen Elizabeth Park Community and Cultural Centre (QEPCCC) to create a community kitchen. Town staff said the concept of a kitchen was strongly supported during the consultation process. In addition to benefiting the groups that use the community centre, Town staff said a community kitchen would also support QEPCCC being used as an evacuation centre in the event of an emergency. Council also voted to apply for funds from the Ontario 150 Partnership Program, which supports collaborative projects fostering partnerships ways to engage and empower youths. It is intended to fund up to 75 per cent of eligible project costs up to a maximum of $100,000. This means the Town share would be around $33,000. Town staff proposes entering into a partnership with Halton schools/school boards to encourage youths aged 10-13 to walk and cycle to school. The project would examine the routes students use to get to school and then determine whether improvements can be made along those routes to encourage more youths to walk or cycle.
