The 44-year-old Oakville man, who had a successful double-lung transplant more than three years ago, earned three gold medals in the ve-kilometre race walk, lawn bowling and bowling at the Games, which were held Aug. 8-13. He placed third and earned two bronze medals in the 100-metre dash and golf. "My goal just after my transplant was just to be able to breath and walk again, that was my hope," he shared with the Oakville Beaver. "And I got so much more than that." Nearly 20 years ago, Childerhose was diagnosed with the severe and rare disease diffuse panbronchiolitis (DP), which causes uid to continually build up in the lungs, similar to cystic brosis. It's traditionally speci c to men of Asian descent living in China, although Childerhose is white and lives in Canada.
