Ships registry: Bahamas. 16051478 · 7/21/2016 Halton continues to be one of the safest communities in Canada. The region had the lowest Crime Severity Index on a list of 100 Canadian municipalities published by Maclean's magazine this month. The list is based on Statistics Canada's 2015 Crime Severity Index, which measures the volume of police-reported criminal offences and how serious they are. According to the list, Canada had an average Crime Severity Index of 69.7 in 2015, which was up 4.5 per cent from the previous year. That translates to 1.9 million Criminal Code incidents (excluding traffic) reported by police in 2015, approximately 70,000 more than in 2014. Halton Region had a Crime Severity Index of 22.9 (down 4.7 per cent from 2014). This was well-received by Halton police with Chief Stephen Tanner taking to Twitter quickly. "Congrats Halton Region and #Halton Police," he tweeted. "Safest place to live, work and play." Despite making crime-related headlines regularly, Toronto also had a Crime Severity Index below the national average at 45.7. Barrie had 43.3, Ottawa had 46.5, while Guelph had 48.4. Grande Prairie, Alta. has the title of most dangerous city in Canada with a Crime Severity Index of 211.6 (up 22.4 per cent from 2014). Red Deer, Alta. had a Crime Severity Index of 182 (up 7.4 per cent from 2014). Other cities with high Crime Severity Indexes included Prince George, B.C. (149.9), Victoria, B.C. (139.9), Surrey, B.C. (128.2) and Saskatoon, Sask. (121.2). According to Statistics Canada, the high Crime Severity Indexes in the western provinces can be partially attributed Chief Stephen Tanner to the relatively high number of incidents of breaking and entering. That said, they also pointed out increases in violent crime in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario also contributed to the increase in the national violent Crime Severity Index. The Maclean's article listed Saint John, N.B. as the city Canadians would be most likely to be sexually assaulted in with the chance of being a victim listed at 1 in 811. Red Deer, Alta. was listed as the place residents are most likely to have homes broken into with the chance of being a victim listed at 1 in 94. The infamous title of city Canadians are most likely to be murdered in went to Fort McMurray, Alta. with the chance of being a victim listed at 1 in 14,706.
