www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, August 4, 2016 | 16 Coach was passionate about hockey and his family continued from p.5 "I never would have obtained any of those accomplishments if he hadn't taught me that dedication and persistence at a young age," said Oliver. Karl's on-ice hockey career began with stints on the Mississauga Braves and Dixie Beehives junior clubs, Oliver noted. After a couple years with the Beehives, Karl was faced with a tough decision -- continue playing hockey in the U.S. in NCAA or give it up and stay in Canada, so he could marry his thengirlfriend (Janine), he said, noting Karl chose the latter and attended the University of Toronto. He began coaching Oliver when he was a child, initially as a trainer on his team, "just to get involved a little bit." "He coached my teams, as assistant coach to Roy (Gringmuth) for about seven or eight years," he said. After Oliver hung up his skates for good following a knee and hip injury, he coached with his father for a year, which was "very, very interesting" because he got a behind-the-scenes look, he explained. "Everyone in the rink could hear Karl's voice across the ice, if he wasn't happy. His booming voice kind of resonated through the arena," said Oliver. "He was so passionate about hockey, so passionate about all of his players making the next step. They were able to achieve that ultimate goal of winning because there wasn't a more competitive guy." Gringmuth, head coach, began working with Karl, who was an assistant, in 1997. The pair jointly coached their sons for several years -- from minor atom to minor midget (Gringmuth's son stopped playing in peewee, in AA). "We put a lot of time and effort into coaching the kids, trying to get them to move along. We both shared a passion for the game. He would be the bad cop and I would be the good cop," said Gringmuth. Working side-by-side for many years yielded numerous tournaments and championships for Gringmuth and Karl. "Playing in tournaments was about the kids, but it also became about your time spent with your buddies. The tournaments were a blast," said Gringmuth. He, too, spoke of Karl's intensity and dedication as a person and coach, as he was a "very giving man (who was) always thinking about everybody else before himself."
