F orget carpe diem. My goal is not to simply seize the day, but rather, to seize the entire summer: take the season, embrace it, siphon its sweet goodness, and then savour, savour, savour. Yeah, I love summer. Always have. Summer's a reward for having survived another crummy winter and enduring the capriciousness of spring. Trouble is, unless you live in a place like southern California and hang out with The Beach Boys, the season is as eeting as it is fabulous. Sadly, Endless Summer is not a tantalizing possibility, it's just the title of a 1974 compilation album. Last weekend, my wife joined me in my seasonal seizing in what amounted to 48 hours of summer pleasure -- two days that were close to perfect. We rose early on Saturday morning to a confused sunrise. Despite the weather app's insistence it was sunny and warm, the sun was actually shrouded in cloud and the air was almost autumn-cool. Undaunted, we straddled our bikes and set out to challenge a brisk breeze and the steep hills that surround us. Midway through a long ride, we were rewarded by the sun bursting out in full bloom. Back home, we yoga-stretched tight, cramping muscles. Hot-tubbed our skin into prune-y bliss, then treated ourselves to an hour of reading at poolside. How lazy. How decadent. How... summery. That night we found ourselves where we nd ourselves a few times each summer -- a tradition that remains a treat -- under the moon and stars at the Jackson-Triggs Amphitheatre listening to a fab foursome of savvy (and chatty) musicians -- Chris Murphy (Sloan), Moe Berg (The Pursuit of Happiness), Craig Northey (The Odds) and Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies) -- outsinging the crickets. The perfect concert venue, an idyllic summer setting, an incredible evening. Sunday dawned. Back up on the bikes, this time under azure skies and blanketing heat. Back home, a quick swim.
