The Ontario Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing held an open house in early July at Oakville Town Hall to give the public a chance to review proposed changes to land use plans, which would boost population density targets in some areas. Using display boards, maps and other materials, Ministry staff answered questions about suggested adjustments to four provincial land use plans Growth Plan for the Greater Golden Horseshoe, Greenbelt Plan, Oak Ridges Moraine Conservation Plan and Niagara Escarpment Plan. The four designs work jointly to manage growth, build complete communities, curb sprawl and protect the natural environment. "It's important they continue to work well together, which is why they're all being reviewed at the same time. One protects the environment, the other manages growth and they work like a yingand-yang," said Tanzeel Merchant, partnerships and consultation director at the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing's Ontario Growth Secretariat. The panel provided 87 recommendations in December, Merchant said, noting some were broad in scope and addressed how governments function, while others were "targeted specifically" at policy changes advocated. "When plans are revised, the proposed changes need to be made public so that stakeholders and our First Nations and Métis communities have a chance to consider what those changes are, provide ministers with feedback," said Merchant. "They become final, based on what the feedback is, what changes the government may want to make and then come into effect. These are just changes that are proposed at the moment." Legislation requires a review every 10 years to ensure plans are always "forward-looking," Merchant said, because issues and demographics change. "These next set of plans are looking to 2041. Ten years (from now), we will look 10 years ahead. The issues we were dealing with 10 years ago, some of them were not the ones we have now and were not on the horizon then," said Merchant. see Keeping on p.29 Take a kid to Course July 4th - Aug. 12th Kids 16 years old and under play for free with a purchase of a regular priced green fee What are you crowdfunding for? fuellocal.com is an online platform to raise money through crowdfunding: an opportunity for a collection of individuals to make donations in support of a cause.
