- Another attempt at attention by McHaleBy Erin Tully, CALEDONIA
While tensions between Six Nations and Caledonia have fallen to a relatively low state people may be working to change that. Gary McHale has planned a rally on April 19 that has the potential to spark old tensions.
McHale has sent a letter to OPP Commissioner Julian Fantino requesting the commissioner's cooperation in the situation. McHale told Fantino that the rally is to "represent the 3rd year anniversary of the failure by the OPP to uphold the law".
In the letter McHale said that his intention is to raise a Canadian flag, because he has the right.
"On April 19, 2009 it is my intention to rally people in Caledonia (those who voted for me and those who have signed the petition) to raise a Canadian Flag as a symbol of our Right to refuse to submit to Race Based Policing forced upon the residents of Haldimand."
McHale didn't say where he intended to raise the flag but in the letter he mentioned his resentment that Native people were allowed to raise a flag across the street from Kanonhstaton (former Douglas Creek Estates land).
McHale has given the OPP an ultimatum to meet with organizers before the event or he would assume that they are unwilling to "cooperate to ensure a peaceful protest". He also said that if the OPP "obstruct" those who are trying to raise the flag, he would charge them with the criminal offense of mischief.
McHale has not yet received a reply from the OPP or Fantino on this matter.
