Nease cartoons make a comeback in the Beaver by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Friday, July 8, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The familiar editorial cartoons of Steve Nease and his family-humour comic strip Pud have returned to the pages of the Oakville Beaver . They make their comeback on the editorial page (p.6) in today's edition. Nease, who has called Oakville home since 1979 when he landed a job with the Oakville Journal Record, says he's happy his works are returning to his old stomping grounds. He began working for the Beaver when the newspaper merged with the Oakville Journal Record in 1984 and remained until 2008 when he decided to pursue an independent career. Until a few years ago, Nease continued to freelance for the Beaver, as well as for other publications across Canada. The award-winning cartoonist hopes readers will once again enjoy his take on local, provincial and national issues as well as his family's antics in Pud. They will, of course, have to catch up on a few things. For one thing, his sons range in age between 19 and 36 and there's a new addition to the Nease family -- Lucia. "Our oldest son Rob and his wife gave us our first grandchild last year," said Nease. The baby girl, now almost one year old, adds a different dynamic to the strip that was often male-dominated because of Nease's four boys -- Rob, Ben (Pud), Sam and Max, Nease said. He was quick to add his wife Dian continues to run the show and provides balance in the family. Nease began creating political cartoons upon graduating from the University of Toronto with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He looked at how other cartoonists created editorial cartoons based on current events and decided to give it a shot, shopping a few around at small town newspapers. One opportunity led to the next and Nease soon had a full-time job doing what he loved in Oakville. In 1984, while working for the Beaver , he created Pud based on his everyday life. He recalls the first strip that ran depicting himself trying to feed his infant son Ben (Pud). Ben wanted nothing to do with the food offered and instead, crawled to the dog's food dish, which seemed more appetizing. Nease says the Pud comic strip and Oakville cartoonist Steve Nease is back in the Oakville Beaver. "I just enjoy what I do," he said, noting feedback from readers who enjoy his work also motivates him. "I can't think of anything I'd rather be doing, so that's what I'll continue to do," Nease said, noting as much as they always seem to stay the same, political figures and issues constantly change. "I can always count on politicians (to inspire me) to do a cartoon about them," he added. Former Oakville mayor Ann Mulvale and Oakville Mayor Rob Burton were a source of inspiration for Nease when he created some editorial cartoons with the two of them "duking it out" during a mayoral race about a decade ago. "They both had good senses of humour about those cartoons," he recalled, joking it was a race to see who phoned him first to get the original. Nease says he loves keeping people up-to-date on the news and providing comic relief. He doesn't shy away from controversial issues. "Everything doesn't have to be serious all the time. You can tackle a serious or a dry political issue by throwing a little humour into it and it might make it a little more interesting," he said. One of the more memorable editorial cartoons he created was in 1994, called, "Canada's worst nightmare." It depicted a mad cow wearing a SARS mask while being bitten by a West Nile mosquito. "That cartoon, as they say, went viral on the Internet and went around the world," he said, "Thousands of people shared it around the globe and that cartoon struck me because it really illustrated the power of the Internet...." Reflecting on his career, Nease said he's had a lot of fun drawing about "what people are talking about." While it has been great to be recognized with numerous awards, including multiple Ontario Community Newspaper Association's (OCNA) Cartoonist of the Year awards, what he has most appreciated is "the fact people enjoy reading my work and cut a cartoon out of the newspaper and put it on their fridge with a magnet." "That tells me I chose the right profession," he said. "I'm glad I gave it a shot." Nease's editorial cartoons and Pud comics strip will appear weekly on p.6 in the Friday edition of the Beaver.
