Two homes sustain heavy damage in early morning blaze by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 7 | Thursday, June 30, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Oakville Fire Department says one person was taken to hospital and treated for smoke inhalation after fire engulfed two homes on Oxlow Drive early last Friday (June 24) morning. Firefighters were called to the scene at 3:20 a.m. They arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from both dwellings with fire already breaking through the roof of one home. A total of six fire trucks were called to the scene with firefighters battling the stubborn blaze, room-by-room, for the next two hours. The final flare-up was extinguished around 5:30 a.m. "They were doing ventilation and attacking in the attic," said Gary Laframboise, Oakville Fire Prevention Chief. "They fought the fire from the north side. Hit hotspots. Put out a fire in the front bedroom of one building. Our crews stripped drywall and exposed hotspots and fire extension in both houses...The fire was really rolling in these two structures." At one point firefighters had to retreat from one home due to the intensity of the flames they were facing. Families from both homes were present when the fire began, but were able to escape. While the dwellings were detached, Laframboise said that if the eavestroughs were close enough to each other, it is a simple matter for fire to spread. The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. While the blaze is not considered suspicious at this time, the office of the Ontario Fire Marshal will be conducting an investigation due to the fact the fire involved two homes and a person was taken to hospital. Both homes were severely damaged during the fire. Oakville Deputy Fire Chief George Birtig said the house where the fire started will need to be torn down. He noted a determination has yet to be made as to whether the second home involved in the fire can be salvaged. Damage to the two dwellings has been estimated at more than $1 million.
