CANADIAN CHAMPION STAFF As it gets busier and busier leading toward the Christmas holidays, Halton Regional Police are gearing up for its second annual HOLIDAY program. HOLIDAY 2.0 as Milton division Det. Barry , Malciw calls it, is an initiative designed to ad- dress the increased number of service calls police receive over the holiday season. They can happen for any number of reasons, but stressors like family commitments, shop- ping, entertaining and bank account bal- ances â€" or more accurately lack there of â€" make the holidays a particularly busy month. l l “A project team was initiated to speciï¬cally target these identiï¬ed areas,†said Malciw. “Several proactive policing strategies have been selected to target the areas.†MM For example, RIDE (Reduce Impaired Driving ‘ Everywhere) programs, checks on people They also lead to an increase in chances for , criminals to victimize. An analytical evaluation of the 1 District (Milton, Halton Hills) crime statistics during past holiday seasons identiï¬ed an increase in police calls for service in seven speciï¬c areas with court-imposed conditions, targeted trafï¬c enforcement at high-collision inter- sections, media awareness for domestic and mental health incidents, proactive retail theft initiatives, and increased police pres- ence at targeted location, will help to make the holiday season as safe as possible for all Halton residents, he added. The program runs December 7 to January , 4 and includes ofï¬cers in specialized units, â€" and make up the acronym, HOLIDAY: High ‘ Enforcement on repeat offenders; Organized retail and property crime; Links to service and Mental Health; Impaired driving; 00- mestic incidents; Alcohol related issues/traf- criminal investigators and community part- ners.
