Suppliedphoto Teammates crack top-100 in OHL Priority Selection A pair of Miltonians and Halton Hurricanes teammates were among the top 100 names called during the OHL Priority Selec- tion April 11. Helping lead their minor midgets to OMHA bronze and a trip to the OHL Cup, centre Matthew Struthers and goalie Christian Propp were taken in the third and fifth round respectively. Struthers went 55th overall to Owen Sound and Propp was the 98th overall pick, selected by Barrie. Struthers is the highestâ€"drafted Miltonian since 2006 -â€" when Josh Brittain was taken in the first round, 14th overall by Kings- ton â€" while Propp is the only local goalie selected in the first five rounds in the past 15 years. Two Milton youths tackled a relatively new sport like old pros this past season, adding to the overall success of the Mil- ton Heights Race Club. Thirteen-year-olds Isabella Ottino and Eric Frost found themselves among the top few finishers throughout their board- er-cross (SBX) campaign. That trend continued at the recent pro- vincial championships at Beaver Valley. Golden in almost every race she entered on both the Ontario and western New York circuits, Isabella raced to silver in the Local teens show strongly on SBX scene Under-14 girls provincial finals â€"â€" falling just short of another trip to the top of the podium. Unfortunately, a recently-diagnosed heart condition â€"â€" which has since been repaired at the Toronto Hospital for Sick Children â€"- kept her out of the national championships on both sides of the bor- der. She was ranked fourth on the us. side fol- lowing her stellar showing in the Western New York series. Also standout out across the border, Eric 3 He's the first Milton netminder taken overall in the draft since 3 2011, when Guelph used their seventh round pick (132nd) to ac- ‘ quire Jason Da Silva. ; Captaining this year’s Hurricanes, Struthers once again estabâ€" lished himself as a point-a-game producer with 20 goals and 20 assists in 35 league games. This put him fourth in assists, fifth in total points and sixth for goals in the SCT A. A formidable presence between the pipes, Propp went 12-3- 3 with three shutouts in regular-season play, finishing with a goals-against average of 2.05. Their collective efforts helped the Hurricanes finish first in the : ‘SCTA at 22-9-5. enjoyed a hefty medal haul in Western New York with a gold, two silvers and a bronze. That track record of success no doubt served him well earlier this month at Kelowna B.C.‘s Big White, where he raced to a ninth-place showing at the Canadian championships. Before that he showed strongly at the provincials, placing fourth in the U14 boys division â€" living up to the fourth- place ranking he'd built up during a con- sistentlyâ€"strong season.
