As approved by the Board, I spoke in support of Sheridan College's request for a $1 million grant from the Town of Oakville as part of the funding for a new $16.75 million Communication, Culture and Information Technology (CCIT) facility to be located at the Oakville campus. This facility would complement a $24.7 million investment by the University of Toronto at Mississauga and allow the two institutions to offer a new joint degree program in CCIT. The Sheridan College request from the Town was to leverage an application for funding from the Ontario SuperBuild Growth Fund for Postsecondary Education Funding. I am pleased to say that Town Council approved the request with the grant to be allo cated to an incubator facility within the complex. Subsequently, the Ontario Government has announced a contribution of $27.3 million from the Super Build program to the CCIT facilities to be built at the Oakville and Erindale campus locations. Approval of this fund ing will allow Sheridan College to continue expanding thus reinforcing its leadership position in educational excellence and aiding Oakville's ongoing econimic development. Municipal amalgamations have been mandated to take place in a number of Ontario * communities, including Hamilton-Wentworth, before this fall's municipal elections. It is clear that Halton Region will not be exempt from this process in the period after this year's election and in view of this I have been in touch with the Ministry of Municipal Affairs and Housing to obtain information on what is planned for our area. Over the next few months, the Greater Toronto Services Board will be issuing a report recommending its future roles and responsibilities. It is expected that this report may lay the foundations for municipal restructuring in the GTA. The Chamber expects to be an active participant in the process whereby local solutions to gov emment restructuring are put forward as an alternative to changes being imposed on us by the central government. I will keep you informed on our activities in this area and seek your suggestions.
