Eng. Hank passed away peacefully in his 96th year at Oakville-Trafalgar Memorial Hospital on Friday, June 17, 2016 surrounded by loving family. Hank is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Grace (nee Mohr), his daughters Elizabeth (Rolf Wichman) and Janet, and was predeceased by his son-in-law, Thomas Graham Stone. He leaves behind four grandsons of whom he was immensely proud: Christian Wichman (Nataly Kim), Eric Wichman (Caitlin Harrigan), Michael Stone (Alice Luo) and James Stone. He also leaves behind his sister-in-law and her husband, Betty and Jack Green, their children Carol, Gayle, Nancy and Geoffrey and families, as well as relatives in Finland. Hank was born in Pori, Finland, the only child of Elsa (nee Tytykoski) and Karl Fredrik Vuori. The family emigrated to Canada in 1924 and Hank spent his childhood in Garson and Sudbury Ontario. He graduated from Sudbury Mining and Technical School before earning his B.Sc. in Mining Engineering at Queen's University in 1943. It was there that he met Grace and they married in 1949. After serving in the Canadian Navy, Hank began a long and distinguished career as an exploration geologist with INCO during which he literally travelled the world. His extensive work in the Canadian Arctic resulted in the discovery of several significant mineral deposits. He also explored properties in Guatemala, New Zealand, Australia, New Guinea, Borneo, Brazil, Cyprus, Mexico, South Africa, several central American countries as well as northwestern and southwestern United States. Alongside his professional work, Hank was a gifted amateur photographer. Upon his return the family gathered for what was affectionately known as "compulsory admiration time" to view his latest collection of slides. Beginning with his first trip to the arctic in 1948, Hank documented the people he encountered as well as the terrain and wildlife. Some of his arctic photos were published in LIFE magazine and Time/LIFE books. Those who knew Hank will remember his quiet reserve combined with his wonderful sense of humour and ability to tell a good story. His numerous adventures in the field were the source of many of these stories. Close encounters with bears and poisonous snakes as well as sleeping in snowbanks all became humorous anecdotes when Hank recounted them with his characteristic grin. Hank was dedicated to his family and spent a large part of his retirement restoring the Mohr family home in Quyon, Quebec. Armed with considerable practical skills and the ability to outwork men half his age, Hank took on any challenge. Splitting rocks, digging trenches, and planting thousands of trees were his idea of healthy exercise. As a result of his hard work and dedication, the extended family spent many, many happy times together at the old house. The Vuori family extends their deepest appreciation for the wonderful support provided by Caregivers Alexandra and Claudette as well as by the doctors and nurses of Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, in particular Eileen McDonald Karcz. Visitation is at Kopriva Taylor Funeral Home, 64 Lakeshore West, Oakville, on June 24, 2016 from 11 a.m. with funeral service to follow at 1 p.m. Interment will be at the Mohr Cemetery in Quyon, Quebec later in the summer.
