www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, June 16, 2016 | 12 Palermo School students recognized for eco-reporting by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff A budding reporter from Palermo Public School is being recognized for her creative and engaging story about plastic pollution. Grade 7 student Sarah Goodstadt was among a number of youths from around the world recognized in the Foundation for Environmental Education's international eco-journalism competition, judged late last month. The jury, comprised of people in the fields of environmental journalism and education for sustainable development, met at the Foundation for Environmental Education head office in Copenhagen, Denmark May 26 to discuss the top national entries in the media categories of articles, photographs and videos, across the age categories of 1114, 15-18 and 19-21. Goodstadt placed second in the article category for ages 11-14 for Now You See It, Now You Don't: Plastic Pollution Near and Far. Through the program, youths can see first-hand how their choices are impacting the environment, and they also have an opportunity to get involved and make a difference in their community. Jennifer Maryville Environmental Defence communications She will be awarded a prize and have her article published online. Previously, Goodstadt and two other Grade 7 students at Palermo Public School, Ashley Kelly and Jalen Chambers, were recognized in April for receiving top honours in the annual national ecojournalism competition for youths, run by Environmental Defence's Young Reporters for the Environment (YRE) program. Goodstadt placed first in the article category for ages 11-14. Kelly placed first in the photo category for ages 11-14. Chambers took second in the video category for ages 11-14. As winners in their respective categories, the local students have their submissions published online. They were also invited to participate in an environmental reporting workshop in Toronto last month. Environmental Defence Communications Manager Jennifer Maryville stated in a press release YRE Canada is more than just a competition. "Through the program, youths can see first-hand how their choices are impacting the environment, and they also have an opportunity to get involved and make a difference in their community," she said. First place winners also received $500 to go towards new electronics (such as a laptop or camera) and cash for a green initiative at their school. Every year, the competition receives hundreds of entries from youths across 29 countries. Last year, two Canadian entries received third place in their respective categories. YRE is a national environmental education program, run by Environmental Defence, that gives youths the opportunity to be part of the solution by producing creative and engaging environmental journalism.
