Distracted driving remains a big problem on our roads by Tim Whitnell Metroland West Media 5 | Friday, June 3, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Some Halton police officers might have had writer's cramp last week after police averaged writing more than 270 tickets a day during Canada Road Safety Week. From May 17-23, Halton officers supported the national driving campaign, conducting a heightened traffic enforcement on area roadways. They focused on the Big 4 Killers -- aggressive and distracted driving, impaired operation of a vehicle by alcohol or drug use, and seatbelt use. During the seven days of enforcement, which ended on the Victoria Day weekend, Halton police laid 1,903 charges. The top three charges by volume of tickets handed out were for speeding, disobeying a stop sign and distracted driving (cellphone use). During the campaign, Halton police conducted a variety of enforcement, including Reduce Impaired Driving Everywhere (RIDE) spot checks, to address the ongoing concern of motorists choosing to drive while impaired. Twelve motorists were charged with impaired driving-related offences, which includes being impaired by drugs. On Friday, May 20, officers in a RIDE spot check on Appleby Line near Fairview Street in Burlington stopped and charged a driver found with three pounds of marijuana. On Saturday, May 21, a single-vehicle collision below the Skyway Bridge in Burlington led to a woman arrested for impaired driving and cocaine possession. On Sunday, May 22, officers doing speed enforcement on Bronte Road near Speers Road charged a driver with being impaired by alcohol and drugs and seized a quantity of marijuana. "Traffic enforcement, public messaging and the time officers spend on these traffic initiatives are just one element of our collaborative strategy towards improved road safety. It involves our region, each municipality , partnering agencies and citizens focusing on opportunities for prevention, social development and risk mitigation," said Halton police Deputy Chief Nishan Duraiappah.
