And as someone who has coached a team to a provincial title, he knows what it takes to be successful. "It's not just kick and chase," he said. "It's structured soccer and really talented players. It's the best year I've seen before. That's a testament to Halton soccer." That only makes what the Titans accomplished this season even more impressive. Holy Trinity capped an undefeated season by winning the Halton junior girls' title with a 4-1 victory over the Loyola Hawks Tuesday. Lauren Taylor had a feeling the Titans had a chance to do something special. "I knew from elementary school there were a lot of girls that played rep (soccer) and competitive sports," said the Titans' midfielder. "Overall, our depth was really good. Our subs are very talented, skilled players." Holy Trinity's starters wasted little time demonstrating their skills. Mari Young chased down a ball near the Loyola goal line and sent a cross to Cathy Cavero, who was wide open for an easy tap-in. A few minutes later Courtney Wilson chipped the ball to Alexa Miller at the top of the box. She quickly turned and unleashed a perfect kick that sailed over the outstretched hands of the Loyola keeper and under the bar. "I think our team just works well together," Miller said. "We have good teamwork and nobody is selfish. We all know what we need to do to work well as a team." The 2-0 deficit left Loyola with a daunting task. Holy Trinity surrendered one goal in each of its first two regular-season games. Af- ter that, a veteran defensive unit consisting of Taylor, Wilson, Sarah Zanzana, Rhea Jasavala and keeper Eilidh Major did not allow another for more than a month. In league play, Holy Trinity outscored its opponents 25-0 over a stretch of six games, including a 7-0 quarter-final win over the Corpus Christi Longhorns and a 2-0 semifinal victory over the Hayden Huskies. In the final, Trinity faced a Hawks team that had put together a 5-1 season, outscoring its opponents 24-5. "Loyola's a good team," Bonfiglio said. "We got to them early and with the conditions today (temperatures of nearly 30C), it was tough to come back." Young's header that made it 3-0 made the job that much tougher and Trinity nearly added another before the half. A nice strike by Cavero just inside the post put Trinity up 4-0, a total that might have been higher except for a couple of goal posts hit by Wilson and Miller. Loyola would break the Titans' shutout streak. Emma McEwan picked off a pass and broke in on the left side before slotting the ball just inside the far post. It was just the third goal allowed by Trinity in 16 games this season. "Three of our goals (in the final) were scored by Grade 9s. They came in and played like it was no big deal." Bringing home the championship, now that was a big deal. "I was very happy to win it for our school and make Holy Trinity proud," Taylor said. "It sums up how hard we worked all year." Holy Trinity of Oakville won the Halton AAA field lacrosse title with an 11-6 victory over Christ the King of Georgetown last week. Both teams are competing at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AAA tournament in Georgetown that started yesterday (Wednesday) and wraps up tomorrow. "(We were) was able to beat a well-coached, tough CtK squad in the final," said Robbie Nacevicius, coach of the Titans. Nacevicius said standout players for his team this season included Kyle Kolwich, who is headed for North Carolina to play for the Tar Heels in September 2017, Mar- ley Angus, who leads the team in goals and assists and goalie Jacob Patriquin. The Titans, seeded No. 4 at OFSAA, opened play with a surprising 10-3 loss to No. 13-seeded Mayfield. They'll attempt to get back in the race for a playoff spot with two games today (Thursday).
