Also known as Lou Gehrig's disease, ALS is a progressive neuromuscular disease in which nerve cells die and leave voluntary muscles -- such as in the arms, legs and face -- paralyzed, according to ALS Canada. The barbecue is hosted by Oakville Eye Care, 2460 Neyagawa Blvd, unit 10B, and takes place in the parking lot of the of ce from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. All food and drink proceeds go to ALS Canada. Organizers hope to raise at least $500 from the barbecue. The local optometrist of ce also hosts weekly bake sales and silent auctions. It will also be participating in the ALS Walk in Hamilton on June 18. Participants of the Toronto West TELUS Ride For Dad will start their engines at Oakville's Galaxy Hall Saturday (June 4). Motorcyclists will join in the ght against prostate cancer, the most commonly-diagnosed men's cancer in Canada, according to a media release. Registration for the ride opens at 8 a.m. at the 475 North Service Rd. E. Galaxy Hall, followed by the 10 a.m. start. "The TELUS Motorcycle Ride For Dad is asking the community to get involved, be committed and lend their support," stated the release. "You don't need to be a motorcycle rider to help ght against prostate cancer -- non-riders can make a donation, raise their own pledges as a champion, or just come out to the event to cheer on the riders." Funds raised from the ride supports prostate cancer awareness and research, including the SABR Prostate Trial, a co-sponsorship between the Ride For Dad and the Prostate Cure Foundation. SABR, which stands for Stereotactic Ablative Body Radiotherapy, is a new radiotherapy treatment for men with favourable-risk prostate cancer. "Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed men's cancer. One in seven Canadian men will be diagnosed with this disease and twelve men will die from it today ," Garry Janz, Ride For Dad's national president, said in the release.
