HPV vaccines to be offered to Grade 8 girls next year by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 17 | Thursday, May 19, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The HPV (human papillomavirus virus) vaccine will be offered to all Grade 7 students beginning in the fall. The change, from offering only Grade 8 girls the vaccine to immunizing both girls and boys a year earlier, will help protect more youths from HPV infection and related cancers, a Halton Region Health Department memo states. The HPV immunization program will be publicly-funded. If a Grade 7 student misses their opportunity to get immunized during the school year, they'll have the chance to catch up until the end of Grade 12. "Moving the school-based HPV immunization program from Grade 8 to Grade 7 aligns with expert recommendations to immunize individuals between nine and 13 years of age as a priority, when the vaccine is most effective and will bring Ontario more in line with other jurisdictions in Canada that offer publicly-funded HPV immunization programs in earlier grades," stated Halton Medical Officer of Health (MOH) Dr. Hamidah Meghani in the memo issued to the Regional chair and members of Halton Region's health and social services committee May 10. HPV immunization for Grade 8 girls in Ontario was introduced in the fall of 2007. To support the transition of the program to Grade 7, female students starting Grade 8 this fall will still be able to get the HPV vaccine through school-based clinics. This will be the last year the HPV program will be offered in the schools to Grade 8 girls. HPV is a common virus with more than 100 types, according to the Halton Region website. Of the many types, two have been known to cause cervical cancers and another two have been known to be responsible for 90 per cent of genital wart infections. For more information, visit halton.ca.
