Six Nations News (cont'd) Dr. Sally M. Weaver Dr. Sally Weaver is a cultural anthropologist and has been engaged in cultural research on the Six Nations Reserve during the summers from 1963-1968. This research is subsidized by the National Museum of Canada and the Canada Council. There is no direct salary, the Canada Council merely pays research expenses. Dr. Weaver establishes temporary residence on the Reserve during the summer months by kind permission of the band council and is well qualified for the task. Dr. Weaver was born at Fort Erie, Ont. in 1940. She received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the university of Toronto in 1964 and 1967 respectively. Dr. Weaver is at present assistant professor of the Department of Sociology and Anthropology at the University of Waterloo. In spite of her extensive learning, Dr. Weaver is one of the most likeable personalities we've ever met. Her treatise on the History of the Medical Affairs of the Six Nations 1850-1967 was thorough and complete. A resume of this article appeared in the Historical Edition of Tekawennake. The research takes the form of a historic study of community participation in voluntary associations on the Six Nations Reserve covering the period from 1850-1967. Data will be obtained from two primary sources, archival material in Ottawa, Toronto and in the Indian Agency in Brantford and from scheduled interviewing and participant observation in the Reserve community. Ferry Service The new ferry at Chiefswood is scheduled to be launched on Thursday, Sept. 5th. It is of steel construction and built entirely by local workmen. The ferry will be a considerable boost for travel to Chiefswood. It is recalled that E. Pauline Johnson wrote a poem alluding to the old ferry. Waterworks Also the waterworks program in Ohsweken is progressing according to schedule. Successful Arts Course on Six Nations Reserve Some 60 children on the Six Nations Reserve attended the first summer art course sponsored by the Six Nations Arts Council. The instructor was Miss Sharon VanEvery. She was assisted by Miss Lorraine Hill, a student at B.C.I. The main purpose of the month long course was to enable the Indian children to become more aware of their heritage. The classes were held at four Reserve schools. The art work of the pupils was on display at No. 8 school on the weekend of August 14th and attracted parents and interested friends. Grand River United Church Congregational Picnic An old-fashioned farmers picnic held by the Grand River Church on Aug. 24th at Woodland park proved an unqualified success. The weather co-operated beautifully, and although on the hot side, there was plenty of shade for comfort. Prizes were awarded to children who competed in the various races and balloon and blueberry pie-eating contests. The elders engaged in horseshoe throwing, log sawing and thread the needle competitions. In a final contest young and old alike entered the massive tug-of-war pull. They nearly broke the hay-fork rope. With appetites whetted by an afternoon of keen action, all sat in a circle to partake of a bountiful picnic supper served by the U.C.W. ladies. Fun for all! Wedding Bells Delaware United Church was the scene of a pretty wedding last Saturday afternoon when Miss Geraldine Buck, daughter of Mr.& Mrs. Robert Buck, Delaware, was united in marriage to Mr. David Seth, 6th line. Rev. Kenneth Welch performed the ceremony. Miss Nancy Davis was bridesmaid and Mr. Wilbur Seth supported the groom. Miss Roseanne Wilson presided at the organ. The wedding reception was held in the basement dining room of the church. The young couple received many lovely gifts. Mohawk Pottery The Mohawk Pottery is becoming known the world over.
