Janet Powless, employed by the federal government as assistant superintendent of the Peterborough agency, told the closing session of a three-day meeting of Indian women at Toronto that Indians tend to be reticent because they are afraid of being branded as agitators. The meeting was organized by The Canadian Council of Christians and Jews.Chief Burton Jacobs of Walpole island said Indians must try to improve their relations with white people. He said some Indians still harbor hatred towards whites because of broken treaties which left the Indian filled with apathy, distrust and despair. Mr. Jacobs also said Indians have failed to take full advantage of available grants. A meeting of the Indian Advisory is being held in the Ohsweken Community Hall on Wednesday.
