SEELEY'S BAY LEGION May 2, our elections were chaired by our past president, Comrade Les Smyth, and our guest Elections Officer, Comrade Gordon Scott, who is president of Branch 92, Gananoque. These gentlemen did SUCh a great job that two weeks later we brought in our Deputy Zone Commander Comrade Wilmer Tedford to install the newly elected officers as follows: President for a second term - Orvin Martin; Immediate Past President and Service Officer - Les Smyth; lst Vice President and Sgt. at Arms - Don Charbonneau; 2nd Vice President - Addie Smyth. Executive Committee - Giles Lesage, Velma Turner and Frances Birt. Treasurer Joe Turner; Secretary - Len Whiteford. The Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 491 also installed their new officers at this joint ceremony, which was conducted by their Zone Commander, Mary Battams, as follows: President - June Smith; Immediate Past President - Grace Tryon; lst Vice President - Martha Bennett; 2nd Vice President â€" Hilda Talboys; Executive Committee â€" Shirley Botting, Elsie Willoughby and Shirley McAlonan; Treasurer - Shirley Martin; Secretary - Betty Sly; Sports Officer â€" Rita McCormack; Sgt at Arms - Norleen Hope. We have but one way to thank the outgoing officers who have worked so hard in the past year to promote Legion affairs and to ensure that branch 491 is an asset to the community in which we live. The way to thank them is to turn out one and all (please bring guests) to the Past President's Dinner on Saturday 16 June. Cocktails 6-7p.m. Dinner and Awards 7-8p.m. Dancing 9p.m. See you there. After singing "O Canada" President Orvin Martin asked the Secretary to read the minutes of the April Meeting. He commended June for the splendid entertainment she had planned for our Pot Luck in April and suggested that we might have a similar fun day once every 3 months. The only correspondence was a brochure from Thousand Island Tours concerning Hill Island. In reply to Kendrick's Park Committee, a motion was made that we sponsor a child to be sent there this summer. Orvin reported on the Senior Support group which met in Ganaanue at 140 Garden St. The annual 1000 Island Boat Tour for Seniors will be held June 12th at 10a.m. Margaret Grigsby gave a report on the bus trips ceming up from May 30th to October 9th and 10th. Etheleen Tye announced a bus trip that the Superannuated Teachers are planning to Cullen Gardens June 23rd. The meeting closed with the Mizpah Benediction, followed by refreshments and cards afterwards. Freda Tempest ST. PETER'S A.C.W. The May meeting was held at the home of Jennie Goodier. The reading of the Scriptures and the Meditation were shared by the members. A discussion followed. Mary Dean read the minutes from April's meeting. Roll call found 9 members and 1 visitor. Ann Morris gave the Treasurer's report. Discussions followed regarding catering the Clergy Luncheon on May 22, and the Rummage Sale on May 25 and 26. Mary Dean motioned that Ann Morris pay all outstanding debts. Gail Moore seconded the motion. A brief discussion followed regarding letters from our foster child, Zibideru. The meeting closed with the Members' Prayer and the Grace. A light lunch followed. The next meeting will be held at Jean Rogers' on June 5. At this meeting we will (cm a Residents‘ Association for the Greater Seeley’s Bay Area which will include the Villa e of Seele ’5 Bay and the surrounding area within 25km. This inclu es arts 0 two other townshipsâ€" ittsburgh and Ston'ingtonâ€"as well as the Rear of Leeds and Landsdowne. The mandate of the Association will address several concerns. It is simply as follows: - To kee area residents informed of ossible upcoming changes to the official lans of the three townships named above. With a Residents’ ssociation extant it may be possible to influence local politicians it there are problems with proposed changes. - To preserve valuable agricultural land in our area which is rapidly disappearing. - To promote environmental consciousness and res onsibility in our area with respect to our section of the Rideau aterway, sur- rounding lakes, rivers, creeks and marshes. ' To maintain the quality of life in our area as ruraL At the meeting of june nth, a working Committee for 1990-91 will be elected. SEELEY'S BAY SUHHER BALL July and August Registration for T-ball (435-7 yrs) Softball (8-12 yrs) will- be held on Tuesday June 12, 7.00 p. at the Seeley's Bay Library Comunity Room. Registration fee $5.00. It is important for softball participants to register at this date so that teams can be selected.
