6 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN ELGIN U.C.W. The U.C.W. met March 14, 1989 at the Church with an attendance of 25 ladies. The meeting was opened with prayer by the president, Shirley Bryden. The worship was led by Sandra Freeman with Easter as the theme. The scripture was read by Leorene Hayes and was from Luke 24. May Dennison, Phyllis Connell and Leah Freeman had readings. Sandra also had one on the history of the Easter lily. Hymns, "In Suffering Love" and "Take My Life and Let it Be" were sung with Marion Seeley at the piano. The offering was taken and dedicated by May. Marion was the leader of the study program. Irene Guthrie, Ev Campbell and Helen Burtch assisted. The program was on Africa and Black women in particular. They cope with being black, poor and women. Four women and what they accomplished in their circumstances were described. These are unsung heroines in their country. The business segment opened with the reading of the minutes of the February meeting by secretary, Lydia Tackaberry. Several reports were given by committee Chairpersons. Also, comments were made regarding Presbytery and the World Day of Prayer which were encouraging. Correspondence and other business items were attended to. Shirley closed the meeting with all saying the Irish blessing. An enjoyable social hour followed. SOUTH CROSBY HEART AND STROKE CAMPAIGN - 1989 The Heart and Stroke Campaign for Elgin and the surrounding area has been completed and was very successful. A total of $2613.50 was collected, an increase of $92.50 over 1988. On behalf of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, I wish to express appreciation to all the canvassers and contributors for their help and generosity. I would like to thank the Elgin Lions Club and the Elgin Lioness Club for their generous donations and also to the members of the Lioness Club, Rita Ingram and Cathy Mallen who helped with the canvassing. Special mention goes to Leo Kenney who received contributions totalling $338.00 in his area. Thank you also to Donna Welch and Jane Simpson who assisted in Crosby and Jones Falls. I wish to express appreciation to Karen Glover of the Bank of Montreal for her assistance in the final counting. Sincerely, Loree Smith campaign Captain ELGIN LIONS CLUB NEWS District Deputy Governor Gerry MacDougall, a member of the Elgin Lions Club, paid his official visit to the club on March 7th, and informed members of activities taking place at the district level. The same evening, two new Lions, Patrick Kenney and Paul Weinick, were inducted into the club by Lions Ben Campbell and Harry Seeley. Marilyn Tedford and a group of her Grade 8 students were guests of the club on February 20th. Through words and actions, they demonstrated to club members what they had learned about personal values and life styles as participants in the Quest Program, which is sponsored by Lions International. Dedicated teachers, like Marilyn, are responsible for the conduct and spread of this most worthwhile program. The club donated $1,000 to the Elevator Fund at the Elgin Seniors Apartment Building and also recognized the achievements of the Boys' Basketball team at the High School through support of their travel fund. Lantern readers will be interested to note that when the club celebrates its 40th anniversary on April 8th, three of its original members, Lions Ben Campbell, Glynn Guthrie and Edmund Kenney will be starting their 4lst year of service to the community through Lionism. On Saturday, May 6th, the club will Sponsor a "Sports, Hobby and Recreation Show" in the Lions Hall from 10 to 6. This show will give area residents an opportunity to see, at one central location, the various products available this year. SOUTH CROSBY FRIENDSIâ€"HP CLUB The singing of "O Canada" followed by the Lord's Prayer opened the March meeting of our Seniors club. There were twenty three members and one guest present. The President, Laurence Yateman, said a few opening words. Minutes of the last meeting were read by secretary Helen Burtch. President Laurence welcomed a new member, Mrs. Muriel Fraser. Thank-you cards from Hubert and Doris Summers and one from Margaret Jordan thanking the club for their donation of $300.00 toward the elevator fund in the Rideau Lakes Apartments were read. Rockport, our sister club, has invited us to a pot luck luncheon at 12:30 on May 3rd. The president introduced guest speaker Mr. Ernie Grigsby who had listings and spoke on the bus tours for the coming summer and fall. They sound very interesting and exciting and some also relaxing. At the conclusion of the remaining items of business a delicious luncheon was served. A few games of bingo and cards were enjoyed. June Gamble brought a crokinole board for everyone to use and an extra large cribbage board was donated by Mr. 8: Mrs. Len Warren. fid V ‘i 5% ELGIN AND DISTRICT COâ€"OPERATIVE NURSERY SCHOOL The teachers at the Elgin and District Coâ€"operajive Nursery School have provided the children with another stimulating and funâ€"filled month. In keeping with the Zoo theme, both junior and senior classes participated in a "Safari Hunt Day." All the small hunters were appropriately attired in shorts as they searched for their lion; definitely a popular day with the children. On a very chilly 3rd of March, children and parents journeyed to scenic Bass Lake Lodge, where everyone enjoyed an old-fashioned sleigh ride. After the sleigh ride, we were welcomed inside with steaming hot chocolate and allowed to enjoy our lunch in front of a blazing fire. A great day was had by all. The children have. been busy learning Nursery Rhymes this month; each child taking turns reciting in front of the class, allhelping to develop valuable social skills. In celebration of Easter, the children enjoyed taking part on "Easter Bonnet Day" by wearing their favourite hat. The end of March was highlighted by a "Teddy Bear Picnic" allowing stuffed animal friends to come to school and join in the fun that day. The opportunities for gross motor activities have been enhanced by the recent addition of new playthings, including a new playhouse, a teeterâ€"totter/slide, and several tricycles, all encouraging the spontaneous activity of play. If you think your child might enjoy the nursery school experience, please make note of the following events: On Tuesday, May 2nd, we will be hosting our Open House for parents. This is an opportunity for you to meet the staff, see the facilities and View the children's work, as well as enjoy our Guest Speaker â€" Debbie Nesbittâ€"Munroe of Family Focus. The Open House will be held in the Elgin United Church from 8:00p.m. until 9:30p.m. The school year will end on Friday May 26 with Graduation Ceremonies where the children will participate in a program prepared for this day. Clerk-Treasurer Myrna Stearry, A.M.C.T. MI'S IDCK W.I. The March meeting was held in the Community Hall it was special because many members of Philipsville and Delta branches attended . The 41-] gi rls under the leadership of Nancy Hayes and Jansje Keates prepared the refreshments.This year the motif was Easter and the girls has tasty cupcakes, sandwiches and candies set out on a table decorated with Easter eggs and bunnies. Their efforts were appreciated by all present. The Chaffey‘s Lock W.I. sponsors the local 4H group and all the girls introduced themselves.A cheque for $100.00 was awarded to Cathy Keates as highest Acheiver for the past year. Guest speaker was Margaret Wheatley of Heritage House Interiors,Brockville.The topic was interior decorating.Each woman had questions for Ms. Wheatley, her ideas were fresh and informative and greatly appreciated. President Fleming presented her with a gift and thanks from all present. _ Business was resumed. It was moved that Chaffey's Lock W.I. join the Leeds East District.This has become necessary because of the disbanding of Delta branch.Philipsville also voted to merge with Leeds East and letters will be sent to notify the Provincial office. A nominating committee was formed to organize a new slate of officers to' be installed at the April 18 meeting,at the home of Marion Goulah,7.30 p.m. The meeting adjourned.
