6 NORTH LEEDS LANTERN APPRECIATION NIGHT S IMPSON LODGE On Friday April 14,1989 the Lions Community Hall in Elgin was the scene of an Appreciation Night sponsored by Simpson Lodge, for Joe Raison.150 friends, relatives and fellow masons gathered to congratulate Joe upon his appointment to Grand Lodge. Worshipful Brother Glenn Baker, an ebullient toastmaster, welcomed the guests and the evening began with a splendid dinner catered and served. by the ladies of Philipsville Women's Institute. Following dinner, the "Mellowdears" directed by Marina Kelly and accompanied by Joan Hutchison on the guano, sang an assortment of well loved songs. Speeches in of honour Joe and his long commitment to serving his fellow men were delivered by the present and several past Distric: Deputy Grand Masters;and Worshipful Brothers Jim Simmons and Scott Charland. Glenn Baker with a fine fund of stories, kept events flowing.w.Brother Doug Bond presented a pictorial record both sentimental and humorous, of Joe, his wife Trenna and their two daughters. Joe accepted a handsome gift of luggage and the evening was brought to a close by his informative speech. He outlined the substantial assistance, financial and otherwise, that Masons give to many sections of the community. It is regrettable that these facts are not widely publicized in the media, to answer that tired old question " but what do Masons do?". All in all Joe's night was a fine example of the warmth and affection that surrounds one in a rural area, especially if you are prepared to give of yourself as often and as willingly as Joe has given.
