ELGIN U.C.W. Elgin UCW opened its '89â€"'90 season with a potâ€"luck dinner prior to the meeting. There were 33 present which included 10 members from Olivet UCW. President Shirley Bryden welcomed everyone. The worship portion was taken by Elsa Emmons, Rene Waterfield and Marg Hendrick. The theme was "Wisdom and Thankfulness.” Sandra Freeman introduced our guest speaker, Phil Castle, a staff member of Camp Iawah near Westport. Shelley Leitch, also on staff, assisted. Phil gave a slide presentation and information session regarding the camp. Christian living is the prime emphasis of the camp. Phyllis Connell thanked Phil and Shelley. The business portion opened with the secretary, Lydia Tackaberry, reading the minutes of our May and June meetings. Various committee chairmen gave reports and other business discussed. The Elgin section holds its fall rally September 27th at Newboro. The meeting was closed by Shirley. ELGIN AND DISTRICT COOPERATIVE NURSERY SCHOOL Under the enthusiastic and energetic guidance of teachers Sue Dunfield and Barb Neff and volunteer Anna Stanton, some equally energetic preschoolers are enjoying adjusting to the routines of nursery school. September‘s theme of "Apples" provided an excuse for a trip to Kilmarnock Orchards, with lunch at the nearby locks. This excursion was followed the next week by a messyâ€" butâ€"fun applesauce making session. Such activities are typical of the many planned by the teachers for the children each month. The little ones enjoy and benefit from, not only the teacher planned and directed activities, but also the opportunity to play with others their own age and the experience of getting along inagroup. Warm and caring adults, the bright, newly refurbished room and new, well-chosen toys combine to create a happy and welcoming atmosphere. Enrollment is good, but spaces are still available in both junior and senior classes. Juniors (aged 2% to 3%) meet on Wednesday and Friday mornings, and Seniors (aged l/é to 4%) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons in the basement of the Elgin United Church.
