At Oakville Trafalgar High School (OTHS), Grade 10 students Nick Ren, Javan Jiang and Scott Yu received a third place ranking in the University of Waterloo Cayley Math Contest. The Cayley Math Contest is one of a series of national math contests offered by the University of Waterloo's Centre for Education in Mathematics and Computing for students in Grade 9, 10 and 11. The contests are intended to give students an opportunity to have fun and to develop their mathematical problem solving ability. Over at Iroquois Ridge High School (IRHS), a number of students excelled in the DECA competition. DECA is an international organization of high school and college students and teachers that prepares leaders and entrepreneurs for careers and education in marketing, finance, hospitality, management and other business areas. One of the ways it promotes business among high schools is by holding competitions at the Ontario-Regional, provincial, and international level. In each competitive event, students engage in a role-play case study while a judge scrutinizes their actions. There is also a 100-question multiple-choice exam. The combined scores determine whether the students move on to the next level. Iroquois Ridge High School Business and Family Studies Acting Department Head Jim Fisher said a total of 17,000 students made it to the International Career Development Conference in Nashville, Tennessee in late April. Grade 12 student, Olivia Haynes finished among the top 10 in her event (Restaurant Services Marketing). Grade 12 students, David Kang and Wendy Dong finished top 20 in their team event (Hospitality & Tourism, Team Decision Making).
