The spending recommen dations were made once the board's audited financial statements for 1999 were completed, said McNally. Spending on Abbey Lane was recommended to avoid requiring debentures for the school addition, he said. Program services superin tendent Kit Rankin was among those pleased with the spending recommendations. "I'm so delighted the board acted on this prompt ly," said the superintendent. "We're aiming to have sci ence textbooks purchased and delivered to schools as soon as possible." She's hoping new science materials can reach class rooms in the spring and text books for social sciences (social studies, geography and history) arrive in the fall. The latter materials could take longer because social science resources are still coming onto the market. The board will probably also order learning resources, such as graphic representa tions, pictures and displays for kindergarten and Grade 1 students, she said. Rankin said learning materials are needed for sci ence and social sciences because provincial funding in 1998 had to be spent on mathematics and language arts textbooks. "With all the curriculum changes, we've needed a lot of new learning resources, including textbooks," said Rankin. All classes through Grade 9 have new curriculum and Grades 10-12 will change during the next three school years. There are three ways groups can make money: Donate time to work shifts during the festival, sell festival admis sion buttons and sell raffle tickets.
