Christine & Brian Delaney Reel Views Gilbert sleep with his wife, or why did we only find out in the last five minutes of the movie that one of the lead actors was a drug addict? Does this mean there is a sequel in the works? Scary thought. My v e r d ic t: If you enjoy this type of music, go and enjoy. Otherwise, give it a big pass. ...Brian There are a number of events in the movie that didn't seem connected, but to me they simply added to the feel of authenticity, to the feeling that we were observing first hand the lives of the people who were part of the creation of The Mikado. Unlike Brian, my one criticism would have to be that we did not learn enough about Gilbert and Sulli van, both as individuals and as part of an extraordinary partnership. My v e r d ic t: I highly recommend it, but I realize that you do need to love Gilbert and Sullivan to really appreciate it. And as with most movies over two hours, I too found it a little long. ...Christine 'Topsy-Turvey' opens with ushers in suits and white gloves checking each seat in Lon don's Savoy Theatre, one by one, to ensure that it is clean and ready for the patrons of that evening's performance. This scene rep resents the care and detail that director Mike Leigh brings to this wonderful period piece about Gilbert and Sullivan. The story is simple. It is the story of the writing, casting, and staging of one of Gilbert and Sullivan's best loved works, The Mikado. William S. Gilbert (Jim Broadbent) and Arthur S. Sullivan (Allan Corduner), prosperous partners in producing popular and profitable operettas of the late 1890s, are portrayed as quirky and idiosyncratic. And they are on the verge of dissolving their part nership due to Gilbert's feelings that he is selling out his art and considerable talent by writing formula operettas - rather like a modem day successful author of "bodice rip pers" who longs to write the great Canadian novel. The script and direction, with its minute attention to detail, allow us to become immersed in the minutiae of life in the 1890s, good and bad. To my delight, and Brian's dis may, the director allowed the pro duction numbers to be shown in their entirety. There is a lot of singing in this movie, so if you don't like Gilbert and Sullivan music, you probably won't like this movie. ...Christine It was Christine's turn to choose the movie, and as a lover of Gilbert and Sullivan ("I have seen The Mikado five times," she tells our friends.), her choice was clear. We invited another couple to go with us, and the four of us sat through two hours and 45 minutes of Gilbert and Sullivan. The out come? One "I loved it" and three raspberries. I would describe it as a shrill, disjointed pseudo-documentary about Gilbert and Sullivan. The music of The Mikado made me long for the days when our sons blasted us with Metallica. Much of the dialogue was unintelligible and the behaviour of many of the char acters was left unexplained and often disconnected from the rest of the story. For example, why didn't Open Sunday Feb.
