www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, May 6, 2016 | 12 Humane society celebrates 80 with CATSINO ROYALE by Nathan Howes Special to the Beaver For 80 years, the Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS) has been a small shelter with a huge heart. The locally-based animal refuge and registered charity has been housing and caring for sick, injured, abused and neglected animals in Oakville, Milton and surrounding areas since January 1936. The organization, founded as the Oakville Humane Society (OHS), was created by a group of concerned individuals who began sheltering stray dogs and cats in the community because of cold temperatures, OMHS executive director Kim Millan told the Oakville Beaver recently. "We have been so fortunate in this community to have the support of hundreds of thousands of donors, as well as our veterinary community. We would not be able to do what we do without the support of our veterinary community, | photo by Nathan Howes - special to the Beaver At left, the Oakville & Milton Humane Society (OMHS) Executive Director Kim Millan and feline Simba. "We also have a strong bond with a lot of businesses in the areas. Lexus of Oakville and Frank Apa (president) have been wonderful over a number of years with donations to us." To celebrate eight decades of serving the community, the OMHS will host its CATSINO ROYALE on Thursday, May 12 at the Oakville Conference Centre. The event will feature a cocktail reception with complimentary bar, gourmet dinner, games, luxury prizes and a performance by singer/ songwriter Beverley Mahood. "We're all pretty excited about it. It's a major milestone. Looking back to see how we've grown in 80 years has been an interesting exercise," said Millan. "Every once in awhile you have to put a stake in the ground and truly celebrate. Eighty years is a big celebration for us."
