Local surgeon denounces bombing of Syrian health centre by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 5 | Thursday, May 5, 2016 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com An Oakville surgeon is calling for international action in the wake of Friday's (April 29) bombing of a hospital run by a Canadian non-profit organization in Syria. Dr. Anas Al Kassem, cofounder of the Canadian chapter of the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM), said the Al Marjeh Primary Care Centre in Aleppo, Syria was completely destroyed in the bombing that took place around 12:30 p.m. on April 29. A trauma and bariatric surgeon, Al Kassem received his MD in Damascus, Syria, but practises in Oakville. He had helped to support and operate the Syrian clinic and undertook multiple surgery missions there. "The targeting of health centres and hospitals is a war crime. We strongly condemn these actions stop these crimes against humanity," he said. The statement explained UOSSM-Canada, which works to support the healthrelated needs and well-being of people and communities affected by crises and their aftermath, has sent millions of dollars in medical supplies to this and many other medical facilities in Syria over the past two years.
