www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, May 5, 2016 | 14 Horwath admits big concern over political party financing continued from p.11 to submit ideas on what would make a prosperous Ontario at forontario.ca. Noting "there's no monopoly on a good idea," he said he would vote for what strengthens Ontario. In an interview with the Oakville Beaver, he continued to criticize the current Ontario government for signing energy contracts that cost Ontarians more and for making cuts to health care. "I think people in Oakville are feeling it," he said. "The $800 million taken away from physicians, the cuts to nurses, it means a reduced level of care. And health care is something we care greatly about, whether it's the mental health cuts whether it's the nurses cuts or whether it's the physicians cuts, I don't want to see health care in Ontario continue to be diminished." Brown said he'd like to make it easier for businesses to deal with government and gear young people towards the right professions. More people need to be graduated from skilled trades, he said, and he thinks it would be beneficial to have mandatory financial literacy education. Ontario NDP Leader Andrea Horwath Horwath, who spoke at the AGM on Saturday (April 30), shared with the Oakville Beaver in a phone interview Monday (May 2) her views on what would help build a strong Ontario economy. She said she believes the current government is not leveraging opportunity that exists. Confidence in both the Ontario and global economy must be restored in the wake of the recession, Horwath noted. She said she believes the sale of Hydro One has jeopardized Ontario's competitiveness and she has serious concerns with rising electricity rates. One way to grow the economy and create jobs is to address the skills gap, Horwath said. Similar to Brown's comments, she said young people who are graduating seem to be mismatched with what businesses need. "One of the things we've talked about is putting together a work-integrated learning process," said Horwath, noting a more formal relationship between the business community and post-secondary institutions is needed. Horwath said there is huge concern over political party financing and she's heard business members cynical about a "pay-toplay" culture. Horwath also noted there's a lack of process around incentive programs for businesses and a lack of analysis that follows up with loans and grants to see if they achieved results. She also told the Beaver she's made a commitment to chat with the Ontario Chamber of Commerce as her party continues to establish relationships with business communities across the province to work on solutions together "that can only take the province to a positive place."
