"Reserve Has New Name"

OHSWEKEN - If you have business with Six Nations council, you had better address your envelope "The Six Nations of the Grand River."

That's the new official name of the administration and reserve adopted by the council Tuesday.

During a brief discussion the words "Indian" and "reserve" were wholeheartedly rejected.

"The term Indian reserve seems too set aside, maybe a zoo atmosphere. And calling ourselves Indians is derogatory in terms of our own people," said Chief Coun. Montour.

He said the misnomer "Indian" arose from the folly of European explorers who though they had landed in the Far East when they came to the shores of America.
